SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
Why do you want to serve on the Youth Commission? Why do you believe the Youth Commission is important?
Serving on the Youth Commission is like being the spyglass equipped on a ship sailing toward the uncharted future. While the captain has the ability to steer, it's the spyglass that guides the ship through the currents of youth culture, the storm of present challenges, and the night of young aspirations. In this way, I aim to offer the necessary knowledge that is inherent to my experiences as a student. As an active member of my school's student population, whether that be as a club founder or as a member of the inter-club council, I see the turbulent waters concerning the youth. Through the Youth Commision, I want to direct the community toward meaningful solutions. I want to embody the concave lens, the brass handle, and the sundial on my spyglass to help navigate the sea. Without the spyglass, the ship is blind. Likewise, without the Youth Commission, the community's youth wouldn't be fully represented. Together the captain and the spyglass ensure the ship reaches the "x" on the map. Together, the youth and the community leaders collaborate to benefit all aspects of the community. Only then, can we declare "land ahoy!" and cultivate a better future.

Please explain what you believe is the biggest issue concerning youth in South San Francisco today.
Passion. Passion is this sort of intrinsic motivation driving one's actions. It's the last kick at the end of a race, the unintelligible speech when describing topology, the late nights scribbling poetry at the desk. Yet, it's been eclipsed by the limited exposure to diverse opportunities and academic pressure. A lack of exposure to seemingly "unconventional" career pathways or creative outlets stifle passion. When students only have access to fundamental courses, their passion lacks the sunlight of cultivation. Seeds of curiosity are never even planted. Furthermore, with an emphasis on grades, many students have begun prioritizing academic performance over personal interest. They feel the need to follow a prescribed path that blocks the twists and turns of passion. When such external pressures trump passion, young people become automated - focusing on external and superficial markers of success rather than personal fulfillment. The Youth Commission could address this by advocating for more programs that expose youths to various career paths and creating spaces for exploration. Bringing in mentors from various professions and advertising the concurrent enrollment programs more vehemently are all viable solutions. By providing the seeds of curiosity and the subsequent conditions for its cultivation, South San Francisco can help restore passion among its youth, giving us the tools to follow our true interests.
Can you commit to attending 6:30 p.m. meetings on the third Monday of each month? DYES • NO If no, please explain:
