SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
Why are you interested in serving as a Boards and Commissions member? What do you feel you could contribute?
As someone who holds various identities and intersectionalities, I feel the Equity and Public Safety Commission is a wonderful opportunity to not only share some of my lived experience, but to utilize it and do something meaningful with it to create a stronger, safer, and thriving community in South San Francisco. I grew up caring for my younger sister, Melissa, who had Rett Syndrome and was severely disabled. She was nonverbal and had seizures daily, but she was the light of my life. Navigating the world as an advocate of someone who was disabled offered me a very unique perspective and experience of the world and the large gaps that still exist for the disabled community. My little sister passed away three months ago. I've always wanted to use my voice and privilege to stand up for those who are voiceless or often marginalized or neglected by society. We are all interconnected as humans and I've always wanted to leave the world better than I found it. In a time of immense global horrors and a polycrisis, I know the most helpful thing I can do is focus on my community and to make sure that the people around me are supported, seen, and appreciated for all of our differences and feel safe to be exactly who they are.
What qualifies you for this appointment?
As for my qualifications, I have a myriad of skillsets that vary that could be useful to the Commission. My background is in writing and journalism-I'm a published author. Excellent at taking notes, crafting press releases, and distilling information into useful and engaging prose. I am also a public speaker and figure for the past four years, I've appeared on the Today Show five times, and NBC's California Live as a regular monthly contributor. I am not camera shy or afraid of public speaking. In one of my past roles as Head of Content at Ingenio (a tech company based in San Francisco from November 2019-April 2021) I served on the DEl Committee and helped run events for the company, craft memos that were sent out company-wide, and helped ensure our staff participated in ongoing anti-racism training. My lived experience as a primary caregiver and advocate of someone who was disabled is invaluable and offers a unique lens and perspective. In addition, my mother's family is from Mexico and, although I am white and carry immense privilege which is important to name, I am very proud of my culture and grew up primarily with that side of my family. I also am nearly fluent in Spanish.
What is your vision for growth in South San Francisco?
My vision for growth in South San Francisco is community-focused. Creating more opportunities for the community to gather, share, and really see one another matters deeply to me. Equity and Safety to me extend beyond policies, it's in the daily actions. Building a community where we can ensure all community members have access to food and water by creating a local food pantry, ensuring our public spaces are healthy and thriving by expanding the yearly South San Francisco clean up into a monthly event, or even finding a new plot to create a new community gardens without a waitlist so we can source our own food and share it with one another. Growth looks like caring for one another in the micro moments and by getting to know our neighbors and having events that can connect us and remind us of our shared humanity and values. By focusing on basic needs like food, caring for our environment, and community-led and building events, we can create a stronger foundation for this community to thrive and naturally cultivate a culture of safety and equity along the way. 2 The City of South San Francisco

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
What community activities are you presently involved in, or have been in the past? Prior to my sister passing away (l've taken some time off to grieve and am just getting back into work), I was very involved with hospice work. I've been a volunteer for Pathways since 2022. As a volunteer, I spent time weekly with various patlents all over South san Francisco and the Peninsula. I've viglled witt patients who didn't have family to sit with them as they passed away. I feel that my llfelong experlence as a caregiver and as someone who has experienced Intense medical situations most of my life with my sister Is very rare and unique and I wanted to give back and use It in the best way possible to make a difference in others' lives. I am also very involved in anti-death penalty work. I am very passionate about rehabilitation and don't think anyone should be defined by their worst moment in llfe. Every Ilte Is precious and every human is capable of change and compassion. I was Involved with Sonny Burton's team and advocated for his clemency, which was ultimately granted. I am currently working with Jettery Lee's legal team, and will continue to do work in this area to bring more equity and justice to those who are Incarcerated.
I have lived in South San Francisco since 2019 and love it here. I know nearly all my nelghbors and am so grateful for our vibrant community.
