SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
Why are you interested in serving as a Boards and Commissions member? What do you feel you could contribute?
This city has been our home for nearly 25 years. We raised our family here and know first hand how special our community is. Being recently retired and no longer responsible for elderly caregiving opens time and energy for new ways to contribute to our city and fellow neighbors. I am very excited about possibly serving on this board - and helping to ensure the library's continued strong presence as a welcoming place offering a broad spectrum of activities, materials, and programs for all ages. I hope to bring thoughtful questions, ideas, and perspective of an engaged citizen and parent who has used the library for many years. patients, patrons and donors to simplify, address needs and enhance the user experience. have sought out and appreciate learning from similar organizations and entities on successful (and not so successful) endeavors.
I am enthusiastic about helping the library retain strong support, evolve, and grow - it is already an amazing city resource and will continue to be better in the future.
What qualifies you for this appointment?
I have over 30 years of government experience and over a decade of private sector work. Professionally, I have served in budget/financial management, contract/grant administration, data analysis, policy/procedure development, quality/process improvement, program audit and service delivery roles. I have worked in a variety of organizations and understand the unique requirements for public sector service delivery.
The library has always been a cherished place for my family and I have been a devotee of the library since childhood. I am an avid user and wish to ensure it's strong presence and value to our community. I have reviewed several years of board minutes to better understand the work of the board, attended a library board meeting and have enjoyed meeting board members and staff, who I would love to work with in the future. I completed the city's Citizen's Academy in 2015 which gave me valuable insight into city services and departments. wellness, training, on-boarding, process improvement, emergency preparedness and operational change. I've enjoyed these groups and have actively sought opportunities to enhance the work environment and bring colleagues closer together.
What is your vision for growth in South San Francisco?
The growth of commercial office/lab space in our city in conjunction with new multi-unit housing developments will in time, bring new residents into our city. Three developments alone: 180 El Camino Life Sciences Campus, Southline (Phase 1), and Kilroy Oyster Point (Phase 2) is anticipated to eventually add over 2.5 million square feet of office/research space. My vision is that new employment opportunities (aligned with new housing) will bring in new residents and families that will benefit from a short commute and all our city has to offer. These new residents will desire a library that offers technical ease of use, activities for their families, and services/programs that fit into their busy lives. The growth will trigger innovative ways to deliver/enhance services, which will benefit all residents and their families.
For existing residents, our city's age distribution (according to U.S. Census data for the city posted at bayareametro.gov) is trending higher with highest growth (numerically and percent of total) over the past 20 years in the older age block of 50 and over. As this trend continues for existing residents, programs, activities, and materials (topic/format/language) desired by the older age groups (and those that care for them) will have increasing appeal. Topics could include aging resources, caregiving support, financial planning, health conditions, technology use, and life-long leaming. Activities with multi-generational appeal may also be increasingly attractive.
