EMPLOYER: Up Valley Family Centers - Student Wellness Outreach Coordinator EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Employed
REASON FOR APPLYING: Re-applying. Although time serving on board has been brief, I have learned a lot and see where I can offer my experience and perspective as a community member who has grown up in town, uses the library regularly, and works at a local nonprofit that serves the community’s needs.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: I graduated from the University of California, Merced, with a BA in Anthropology and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies in May of 2022. Most recently, I was certified by the State of California Department of Health Care Access and Information as a Certified Wellness Coach Level 2; a new initiative by the state of California to increase capacity to support the diverse and behavioral health needs of today’s youth.
OTHER RELEVANT EXPERIENCE: Much of my work experience has been centered on advocacy efforts, such as creating frameworks that allow for more accessible and diverse spaces/information that close gaps of inequality. Additionally, my education has prepared me to better understand the systems of power that make up our everyday routine and the underlying effects of these.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Employed by UpValley Family Centers for almost 3 years. Started as a Youth Specialist at Calistoga Elementary, greatly focusing on social-emotional learning and restorative justice implementation. Currently, I am the Student Wellness Outreach Coordinator, working out of CES’s new wellness center, where the aim is to create a safe and welcoming space for students and connect them to services they may need. Through my involvement with UVFC, I work closely with the community and county partners and focus on providing resources, guidance, and support for all.

GENERAL QUESTIONS:
Have you ever attended a meeting of the Commission to which you are applying? Yes, even before serving on the board.
What is your understanding of the role and responsibility of this Commission? From what I have come to learn, the purpose of this role is to offer a unique and thoughtful perspective on the public library’s work and its alignment with its mission and goals. In serving this role, one is required to be mindful of the community’s needs and wants and how to sustain the work that is already being done. Beyond that, it is being an advocate for the library and the services/programs/resources it offers.
What would be your goal(s) as a Commissioner?
A goal of mine would be to continue to diversify programming and make services more accessible to St.
Helena’s underserved community; create a space/hub for community building and events that are accessible for all. The library has and is doing a lot of that, but I would like to focus on more community engagement; Hispanic/Latino families, young adult/older adult programming.
Have you previously served, or do you currently serve, on a St. Helena Commission or Committee? If yes, which one(s) and for what period of time?
Yes, Library Board from February - June!
Is there anything else you would like us to consider when reviewing your application? I do believe it is important to highlight that I was born and raised in St. Helena. I went through the school system and depended greatly on the library as a 3rd space- either for summer activities, a place to study, or even to meet with friends. With the current threats to public and accessible spaces like these, I find it of the utmost importance to protect and advocate for our libraries; to ensure these spaces are available for everyone to use.
I agree that all of the information contained in my responses to the questions on this application are true and accurate to the best of my knowledge. I further agree that, by checking the box below and submitting this application, online or otherwise, I am affixing my digital signature to this form as of the date submitted.
