Interests & Experiences
Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Whether working at a daily newspaper or in private and public libraries, my interests have inevitably turned to history – of the organization for which I worked, its creation, and the setting (city) in which it has flourished. At the same time my curiosity involves home architecture and preservation of unique and beloved city structures. In my early newspaper career, I produced local “building” pages featuring outstanding or historic homes and/or architecture. At Chavez Branch, Stockton-San Joaquin County Library System, I was for years the adult programming director and the majority of the programs starred Stockton and San Joaquin County history. Many programs were unusual, including a rare display of the library’s valuable Audubon prints, presented in collaboration with the Haggin Museum. I am now a local historian. After my retirement I wrote two local history books, Remarkable Women of Stockton and A Lady’s Place, the story of the Philomathean Club’s rise along with the city of Stockton. This gave me a love of research and I am very familiar with historical archives in the city and county. I wish to join the commission as its work is of interest to me, especially to hear citizen input and to help improve the city’s involvement in our historical/cultural heritage.

Please state the reason you would like to be a member of this board/commission.

Membership on this board would be a continuation of my love of things cultural and historical. I have myself, along with Dr. Alice van Ommeren, successfully nominated the Philomathean Clubhouse for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. I also have expertise in grant writing through the Stockton Public Library; for three years I coordinated “The Big Read” program with the National Endowment of the Arts. I am a member of the Philomathean Club, which has been in the area since 1893; the building dates to 1912. As a member of the board of directors, I helped in coordinating the sale of the building from the City of Stockton to private hands.

Have you served on an advisory group before?
Yes No
If yes, please explain.

I served four years on the Stockton Arts Foundation and most recently aided in the consolidation of the Stockton Opera Guild with the University of the Pacific. I have served several years as president of both the Opera Guild and the Philomathean Club. For two years I was a board member of the new Philomathean Foundation, owner of the clubhouse.

How did you hear about the position?

Interests & Experiences
Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

I am a Delta College alumni attending UC Berkeley who’s been heavily involved in the community as one of the youth organizers. I come from a home that’s reminiscent of the systemic barriers that many families here face, especially within the south side of stockton where I reside. While young, I’ve had vast experiences in both the physical realities that come along with poverty while also gaining the academia to collaborate and move the city forward. Being that I have close proximity to many of the problems that we face, I think it could be of use to have a voice that’s considerate of the future that I have to sit in as well as one that has first-hand experience in the issues we want to solve. Historically, the impacted voices have often been ones left out of critical decision-making and I hope that I can be a contributing factor in shifting the dynamics to incorporate as many voices as possible within the community. I’ve also had the opportunity to serve in both local and statewide capacities doing similar work for higher ed, criminal Justice, housing, and more with elected officials and stakeholders which could be a beneficial factor in resources
Please state the reason you would like to be a member of this board/commission.

Aside from what has been aforementioned, this is an opportunity to serve my city in a way where tangible progress can be seen. Additionally, this city suffers from apathy toward its government and I believe it could present some leeway to start incorporating voices of the future, not just now but years after in that I’d like to continue bringing up young leaders behind me Have you served on an advisory group before?

I’ve served in advisory groups for various organizations such as CA FWD, Student Equity and Achievemt State Advisory Group, allcove, and more

Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

In my last two years of college I experienced the murder of one of my best friends from middle school, the suicide of another college friend, as well as the death of my best friend's Mother, a Godfatherly figure in my life, a close cousin, my Grandmother, and my Mother. When my friend was murdered I took celebrated his life by enrolling to study abroad at Peking University in China (seeing the great wall had been a dream we shared together). Studying abroad was amazing: I kindled a love for Chinese language and culture (I would return for intensive language training the next year), I became passionate about environmental law and history, and I was able to meet amazing people from around the world. Toward the end of my stay I had the opportunity to meet a man studying to become a human rights lawyer. His family, members of an ethnic minority Miao group in China, had been "disappeared," likely for protesting the seizure of their village by developers. Instead of shrinking from fear, this man devoted himself to studying the law so he could make the world a better place. In the dining commons once he quoted the bible, saying that "to whom much is given, much is required." Crazily enough, despite being impoverished, alone, and quite probably watched by the state, he felt it was his debt to society to ensure that others could lead better lives. It is difficult to imagine a more inspirational person. As close friends and family passed away my senior year, my friend's mantra became my own. I found that the pain of death was best countered through an appreciation for what I had been given in life. As a UC Berkeley student who came from a supportive, affluent family, with educated parents and a multitude of mentors to guide me through life, I had so much to be thankful for. That self-awareness and appreciation for my blessings in life instilled in me a burning desire to help others. You could say that "to whom much is given, much is required" was my armor and salvation from grief. So ultimately, I want to serve because I want to help others. I feel compelled to do so.

Please state the reason you would like to be a member of this board/commission.

I want to work for the Cultural Heritage Board because I can help the city of Stockton in this role. I was born and raised in Stockton, CA, and spent most of my childhood in-and-around Midtown, Downtown, and Stockton's East Side. My family has been here for 140 years, and Stockton is, and will always be, my home. After graduating from the IB Program at Franklin High School in 2011, I attended UC Berkeley, graduating in 2015 with Honors in History and Geography. I wrote two theses, one on the creation of civic identity in a culturally diverse city in Southern China, and one on the urban morphogenesis of Stockton.

After graduation I worked as a policy analyst for Restore the Delta, and then took a job teaching History and Government at my alma mater, Franklin High School. While there I served as the Head Coach of the Science Olympiad Team, and as a mentor for Extended Essays in the Historical Discipline. I also spearheaded a grant program that established a historical museum program at the school. Currently, I work as the CEO at the San Joaquin County Historical Museum, where I am working with the board and staff to expand our exhibits and programming to address the histories of communities across San Joaquin County, with an emphasis on communities in Stockton’s historic core. I have a deep passion for history, San Joaquin County, and education. Due to my Father and Grandfather having been well known architects in the city, I was constantly immersed in discussions about the history of Stockton as a child, as well as conversations about the importance of preserving historical buildings, artifacts, and landscapes.

After I graduated from Berkeley I partnered with former professors and community members and began writing a book about the history of public investment in the city, focusing specifically on the close relationships between public investment in community building, economic segregation, educational outcomes, and historical amnesia. The book is currently in the publication process. In addition to research, I also work as a private, typically pro bono historical consultant. In that capacity I have worked with Stockton non-profit partners, the SJ District Attorney’s Office, and UOP’s OLLI Summer Program. I firmly believes that to know one’s history is to know one’s self. My goal in life is to use historical awareness to make the world a better place. My experiences growing up in Stockton, studying at Berkeley, and living in China motivate me to use history to empower and provide opportunities for young people, especially those who come from disadvantaged or oppressed communities. My current work with the museum community to expand the museum’s educational programs and to inspire civic engagement in the county’s youth is incredibly fulfilling, and I love serving the community in this capacity. Public service is incredibly important to me because true community improvement can only be achieved through action and engagement. This is personal for me: my Mother passed away of an undiagnosed autoimmune disease that San Joaquin county has the historically highest rates of in country, and my friend was murdered for the color of his skin. These types of tragedies cannot be avoided unless true educational engagement is provided to the community, and that only comes through public service. Working for the cultural heritage board to preserve Stockton’s past, promote historical education, and advice the city council on historical matters will be both impactful and fulfilling.

Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

My partner and I moved to Stockton for her new position as Dean of Regional and Distance Education at San Joaquin Delta College. I am interested in becoming more involved in the arts and culture of the community. I have a real passion and love of history and historical buildings. With my educational degrees in archaeology, art history, classes in architectural design, and background in remodeling and renovation, I can contribute greatly to the Board. Growing up in the Bay Area I have a good knowledge of California history, but since our recent relocation and my current position as Director of Education at the Haggin Museum, I have really begun to dig deeper into Stockton’s and the Central Valley’s contributions and historical importance. Too often I have seen cities lose their connection to the past, especially regarding those underrepresented, by demolishing or over renovating the very buildings and communal areas that were important to making the city/neighborhood/district/region what it currently is. There is a fine line between growth and progress, and art, history, and community spaces for what is beneficial for the community, both educationally and culturally.

Please state the reason you would like to be a member of this board/commission.

I have relevant educational background and experience in historical archaeology, construction, architecture and photography and a desire to serve the community and have a voice in decision-making as opposed to always just being an observer after the fact. Although I do not have any current or relevant local experience, I do have a current CA Real Estate Brokers license.

Please state the reason you would like to be a member of this board/commission.

My interest in history, archeology, and cultural anthropology mixed with my background as a Stockton native is a factor of why I would like to keep being a member of this board. To have the privilege to serve this community and promote and preserve a more inclusive and diverse future is another reason to stay on this board. My tools as a historian and archaeologist, as well as cultural anthropologist help me view Stockton with a lens that many tend to overlook. Our history, diversity, and culture are our biggest assets to our city of Stockton. As a member of the Cultural Heritage Board, not only have I learned more about these aspects of our city, but with the ability of being a member I have exercised my power to preserve and promote positive change within this city.
