Jani
torial Contract Amendment for Waste & Recycling Requirements The Contractor must ensure all janitorial staff correctly sort trash, recyclables, and organics at every collection point, including desk-side bins, conference rooms, lobbies, and kitchen/breakrooms. All materials must be placed in the city's properly labeled and color-coded containers. Waste streams must not be mixed, and containers should be regularly checked for contamination. The Contractor is responsible for providing initial and annual training to all staff on proper sorting and disposal procedures.
Key Contract Amendment Elements
1. Waste Sorting and Collection Requirements
• Janitorial staff must properly sort all waste into three streams: trash, recycling, and organics, at every collection point, including desk-side bins, conference rooms, and kitchen/breakroom areas.
• All materials must be placed in appropriately marked and color-coded containers:
o Trash: Black lid/body. Trash is non-recyclable, non-compostable waste such as Styrofoam, plastic wrap, tape, snack bags, plastic bags, dirty plastic utensils, etc.
o Recycling : Blue lid/body. Paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, and metals. All items shall be clean and dry.
o Organics : Green lid/body. Food scraps, food-soiled paper products (non- waxy), coffee grounds, greasy pizza boxes, etc.
• Containers will be clearly labeled with signage indicating which materials are accepted, using text and images as appropriate.
2. Separation in Janitor’s Carts:
Janitorial staff must use carts with clearly separated compartments for trash, recycling, and organics. This ensures that materials stay properly sorted from all collection points.
The cart design should prevent any mixing of different waste types. When emptying waste, staff must place items into Trash, Recycling, or Organics bins.
3. Service Locations and Frequency
• Desk-side trash and recycling bins must be serviced as specified (e.g., nightly or as otherwise agreed).
• Centralized trash and recycling bins in conference rooms and kitchen/breakrooms, including organics bins, must be emptied regularly to prevent overflow. • Restrooms with paper towels are treated as trash.

4. Co
ntamination Prevention and Monitoring
• Janitorial staff must not mix trash, recycling, or organics together at any collection stage.
• Containers must be checked regularly for contamination. If contamination is found, janitorial staff must inform the designated city contact. Recyclables that are too contaminated (e.g., wet or food-stained items mixed with trash) will be treated as trash.
• Plastic bags are considered trash regardless of what materials they hold. They must not be placed in the blue recycling and green organics bins. All recyclables and organics in plastic bags must be removed from the bags and placed loose into the correct bin. All plastic bags should go in the trash. Plastic bags should never be placed in recycling or organic waste hauler bins in the outdoor enclosure.
5. Training and Education
• The contractor must provide initial and annual training for all janitorial staff on proper sorting procedures and keeping streams separate. • All new staff must be trained in the city's trash and recycling requirements.
6. Compliance and Enforcement
• Failure to comply with sorting requirements may result in formal complaints and corrective action.
• The city reserves the right to monitor and inspect waste streams and collection practices at any time.
