I love sunnyvale and it's my home from last 12+ years. After emigrated, I chose to live in Sunnyvale and never lived or thought of living in any other city. Being on the city council would be a way for me to give back to the city that has supported and encouraged me and my family for the past 12 years. I also see significant challenges in front of the city and I want to roll up my sleeves and help the city. I have a young family and a genuine passion for this City, its people and its future success.

Being outsider and immigrant, i bring in new prespective and thoughts that can help city future policy in making. I have indepth professional leadership skills which i have business to thrive. I always belive in providing equal oppurtunities for everyone to thrive and succeed. I have excellent organisation and negotiating skills. Creative, flexible thinking and decision making abilities.
I'm very enthusiastic and commited to address policy issues and current affairs. Being part of silicion valley and his culture, i embrace those values and mindset which can help the city in related policies. I will work hard for the residents to insure they are well represented, respected and informed. I am the best candidate due to the fresh and new perspective I bring to the table I have Bachelors of Engineering(BS Equivalent) in Computer Science & Engineeing from Bangalore University, India.
I'm software Engineer by profession, I held Head of Engineering positions in my previous companies.
Honestly No, i wasn't sure whether the public citizens are allowed to attend those meetings.
I have participated in the food drives, volunteered to coach kids. i have tried to volunteer for booth duties for elections.
I believe in, all people are born not equally by different natural conditions, nurture and culture. But everyone should be given equal oppurtunities in the life. That's the goal of civilized socities. Allyship is one the main traits of democratic societies. which enables and provide voice for everyone specially for the minority or under preveliged sections of the society. Without diversity we cannot progress or evolve. Diversity os natural course and shouldn't be hindered in anyway otherwise in the end it becomes hard of societies to survive.
No Concerns.

10. Why are you the best candidate to serve as Council Member?
11. Education: List college degrees and majors, and any relevant training or experience that demonstrates your ability to effectively serve the City.
12. Briefly describe your current or last occupation.
13. Have you attended a City Council, board or commission meeting? If so, please describe what you learned and what improvements you would suggest the City consider.
14. Describe your involvement in community activities, volunteer and civic organizations. Do not list party affiliation, memberships or activities in partisan political organizations.
15. Please describe your thinking or experience with equity, allyship and diversity.
16. The City has a Code of Ethics and Conduct for Elected and Appointed Officials and attendance requirements that elected and appointed members are required to follow. Do you have any concerns in these two areas? If so, please describe.
As a city council member, I would bring multiple attributes to the city: leadership, a strong work ethic, good personality, intelligence, and creativity.
I am a self-motivated person who is willing to listen to the residents, analyze data, and discuss the pros and cons of all items on the city council agenda. I understand and have led many meetings following Robert's Rule of Order in college as a fraternity member and now as the leader of the Mountain View Educators Association. My communication and interpersonal skills would allow me to discuss and analyze ordinances, and I am very democratic so if something does not go in my vote's direction. I have the maturity and professional attitude to go with the majority's decision after a vote has been made. I look forward to the chance to be a part of the Sunnyvale City Council.
Boy Scouts of America, Eagle Scout
Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies from California Polytechnic University -Multiple Subject Teaching Credential/ Science Supplemental -Minor in Psychology
Masters in Education Administration from San Francisco State University My current occupation is a 3rd grade teacher at Jose Antonio Vargas. This year marks my sixteenth year working for the Mountain View Whisman School District. As a teacher, I enjoy teaching the students all of the California Teaching Standards through well planned lessons and continual feedback to all stakeholders. I also am on the school's leadership team and the district calendar committee. In addition to teaching, I am the current Mountain View Educators Association President. This is the third year that I have held that position, and I feel I have made a positive difference both to teachers' and students' lives since I have attended and spoken at one Sunnyvale City Council Meeting in regards to helping out the Mobile Home Community. As a member of city council who is filling a vacant position for one year, I would not look to suggest changing any current proceedings of the city council meeting. I feel Sunnyvale ran a very professional, well communicated, inclusive meeting. I have attended many Mountain View School Board meetings as MVEA president.
I currently have none besides those in capacity to my current occupation.
My experience with equity, allyship and diversity is an everyday practice as a teacher. I always try to treat each student of mine equally and provide the best possible enriched education. I was raised in Oceanside, California, and I attended Vista High School which was a very diverse community. I helped out with community service and was a continual volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club. I still converse with some of my friends from kindergarten, and it has been grand to have some great lifelong friendships.
I have no concerns in following the Code of Ethics and Conduct for Elected and Appointed Officials and the attendance requirements. I am a very responsible person who accepts that this position requires a high code of conduct and ethics.

Sunnyvale in my opinion is a microcosm of this country where you are surrounded by so much diversity in language, culture and people. As a first generation immigration and a model minority I think I will be able to connect with many residents who have traveled the same path as me to professional and economic success. My volunteer work over the years has helped me develop deep empathy to the underserved and I consider it my primary duty to provide sustainable solutions to families in Sunnyvale who can benefit from the success of many to get educated and forge a path to their American dream.

Volunteers in mass vaccination drives with San Mateo County Health I come from a middle class family in India where I was well taken care of but frugal living was always the practice. We never had more than we needed and we never wasted anything including food. I came to this country as a student and worked my way to a reasonably good life with a home and savings. I am deeply grateful for my family's role in my education back home and this country's role in giving me opportunities in School, at the work place and in the community to be successful. I do not take any of this for granted. My work with the DV victims taught me how much we have to grow as a community to help women stand up to their abusers and get help from the system to fight back and at the same time I want to find ways to educate our young adults on respecting themselves and their partners. My children teach me on an everyday basis to be a parent who I have no concerns with either of these areas.

City of Sunnyvale – Application for appointment as a Council Member Candidate: Shantha Ranganathan
Answers to question 9,10, 11 and 15 attached:
Question 9: What skills or attributes can you bring to the city:
1. I worked and retired from Intel Corp after 25 years. I worked both as an engineer and an operations manager in the sales team. I have good management and technology skills.
2. I am a certified paralegal and working with the County of San Mateo for almost five years and have a good knowledge of both civil and criminal law and procedures. 3 . I have volunteered over 25 years with MAITRI - an organization that helps South Asian victims of domestic violence - based in Santa Clara county.
4. I have also been in leadership roles (President/Committee leads) in all my children's schools – Stocklemeir Elementary, Cupertino Middle and Fremont High School.
I have good organization skills and also can lead and run teams and am able to work with different groups of people with success.
I have been successful as a first- and second-line manager in a large technology company handling complex customer issues which directly affected our business revenue. I have also helped women in extremely dire situations find their path out of the problem and be successful.
I also consider myself a passionate person who is not afraid to follow her dreams. On retirement from Intel my love for the law pushed me to go back to school at De Anza and earn a paralegal degree, start at the lowest run of the field of law in San Mateo County DA office and now rise to the role of the lead paralegal in the County Counsel’s office. My prior education and experience along with my newly acquired skills was the key to my success.
I consider myself a strong confident person who can speak and also listen with empathy. I also have the ability to explain complex issues to large audiences in a simple manner and be able to look at the big picture when we are analyzing solutions.
Question 10: Why are you the best candidate to serve as Council Member? I came to the United States as a student at the University of Oregon and went on to become a citizen purely based on the education I received, the doors that opened through a good job at Intel and also my hard work. I am fascinated and attracted to the diversity that exists in this country and especially in Sunnyvale. Such a rich diversity of culture, race and ethnicity is something I consider blessed to be part of and happy for my children to experience as it makes them better citizens of the world. Sunnyvale in my opining is a microcosm of this county in every which way I see it.
I feel I would be a good candidate to serve on the council as I have a good combination of skills needed in the job. My age, my experience in the world of technology which is in the DNA of the city of Sunnyvale, my experience in the school system which is a key part of any city’s offering to their residents Attachment 2
and my years of volunteer work in various fields is a good combination to offer the city a honest and diligent representation.
As a first-generation immigrant, as a woman from a developing nation where women are still fighting for basic rights like education and speech, as a mother of two children who grew up in Sunnyvale and in our school systems I have been able to experience Sunnyvale in all its glory and will be a good cheer leaders for our programs. Not having every aspired for political office, I will be a fresh face with fresh ideas and no pre-formed conclusions or any agenda as I have no ties to any industry or leaders or any specific goal to be achieved through this position.
As one of the first PTA presidents of Indian origin I was told by many friends that I paved the way for many parents of Indian origin to join and volunteer and grow to leadership positions in the PTA. I am fearless when it comes to making decisions but am also extremely fiscally responsible and thoughtful about making decisions that affect many.
As a candidate I can promise I will bend to no pressure but will work closely in trusting and respectful relationships with the rest of the team to make sure our work benefits Sunnyvale residents first. And my empathy for the vulnerable population in Sunnyvale – those who experience housing issues, mental health issues, veterans who need help and the list goes on – will help guide my decision to be value added to our already successful city.
Question 11: Education;
• Paralegal certificate - De Anza College, Cupertino - Completed June 2016 • Masters in Computer Science - University of Oregon - Graduated Dec 1990 • Bachelors in Electronics Engineer – India, Graduated June 1986 • Bachelors in Physics – India, Graduated June 1983
Question 15: Please describe your thinking or experience with equity, allyship and diversity.
Equity: I come from a middle-class family in India where I did not want anything, but frugal living was always the practice. We never had more than we needed, and we never wasted anything including food.
I am blessed with a home and good income and savings. I moved from high tech industry to a government job to do something more meaningful and not just go after a large paycheck or stock. I do not aspire to buy additional homes or make a lot more money as I feel I have enough. What I would like to be able to provide opportunity to those who are in need. Here is an example - Fremont High School is one place where I want to help every freshman who needs help to dream and reach that goal of graduating high school. I have seen my son’s friends – some do well, and many lose interest in spite of my pushing them to graduate. A more solid program of tutoring and mentorship is possible in a place like Sunnyvale where there is no dearth of highly qualified residents who are willing to help. I am deeply grateful for my economic and professional success and feel that I owe that to everyone who is not as lucky as I am.
Being fair to all who live her and make sure their experience with the government is not affected by their economic status is what I consider a cornerstone of good government.
Allyship: I grew up in a country with many influences of religion and caste though personally I was raised to treat everyone as equal. The values of the founders of this country have helped me become even Attachment 2
more of a citizen of the world and I think anyone no matter who they are or where they come from deserve any support, I am able to provide. I watch the Olympics opening ceremony and wonder why this kind of friendship and camaraderie transcend sports in the real world.
As I worked with victims of Domestic Violence especially from immigrant communities, I realized that I have to listen, empathize and not judge. I also knew that my quick logical solution is not something what is needed as these women struggle to accept the fact that they are being hurt by someone they trusted and loved or their fear of being abandoned in a foreign country if they report the abuse. Being their friend, their mentor but not become their crutch was a delicate path I have learnt to tread over the years.
Diversity: I have enjoyed the diversity in this country – from watching young kids play in the school next to my home to listening to a senior citizen regaling me with funny stories in the Caltrain. I have enjoyed dancing to music in the streets of SFO during a parade or a festival to enjoying the lights of Diwali and the decorations during Christmas. In my mind people are fascinating and their stories are something I can listen to, enjoy and learn from all day. Celebrating diversity and accepting it and being tolerant of it is something I feel I learn everyday and still feel I have more to learn.
