Maximilian’s Schell
Los Angeles, CA
For the Sunnyvale Amphitheater we want to revisit the effects and ambitions of earlier Ball-Nogues works - Maximilian’s Schell and Liquid Sky at MoMA PS1. These works were not so much objects or sculptures as they were about experiences that remade everyday spaces. They transformed their respective contexts into kaleidoscopic plays with the of changing light and shadow.

11 Cradle
Santa Monica, CA
The inspiration for the structure and form of this work came from an earlier Ball-Nogues project entitled Cradle. Made of hundreds of 316 stainless steel spheres all welded together, Cradle was inspired by the Newton’s Cradle or clacker ball toy that demonstrates the conservation of energy through the transfer of motion as one sphere strikes another.

13 Sunnyvale Amphitheater
For the Sunnyvale Amphitheater we want to revisit the effects and ambitions of earlier Ball-Nogues works - Maximilian’s Schell and Liquid Sky at MoMA PS1. These works were not so much objects or sculptures as they were about experiences that remade every - day spaces. They transformed their respective contexts into kaleidoscopic plays with the of changing light and shadow. Each work cast fractal patterns of colored light onto the ground, bathing the bodies of the visitors in amber and red hues. The warm hues and patterns provide a backdrop that is suitable for both contemplation and social interaction.

The light phenomena of this work is universally appealing and can easily serve as a back - ground for activities ranging from meditation to live music performances.

This artwork is in the lineage of California Light and Space movement as well as related strains of installation art produced in South America during the 60s onward. “Seeing one- self sensing” and the phenomenology of light and shadow are the subjects of this work.

The “canopy” of spheres has an air of lightness. Hundreds of individual spheres in a deep amber hue create a sense of warmth while still cooling the surfaces within its shadow of refracted light. The spheres are parametrically variable in size, from 4 to 16 inches in diameter. Each is supported within a thin matrix of 316 stainless steel rings and rods, cre- ating an aggregate structure so that no stress can be induced on the spheres themselves.

This stainless steel matrix structure is rigid in order to resist uplift and lateral movement due to wind and seismic events.

We achieve our effects by way of the tight integration of concept, computation and fab- rication. The form of the work will be determined during a digital design process and produced by way of CNC manufactured jigs. The effects also are made possible by way of developments in advanced polymer materials. We have used exterior UV resistant polycarbonate on several permanent projects - first for Los Angeles Metro - entitled Get- ting There - and also Shady Lane at the Louisiana State University Health Campus in New Orleans.

The inspiration for the structure and form of this work came from an earlier Ball-Nogues project entitled Cradle. Made of hundreds of 316 stainless steel spheres all welded to- gether, Cradle was inspired by the Newton’s Cradle or clacker ball toy that demonstrates the conservation of energy through the transfer of motion as one sphere strikes another.

We want this work to look to the future while nodding to past Ball-Nogues work and the history of light based installation art in California. Adding the elements of digital technolo- gy and advanced materials make it a fitting emblem for the visionary culture of Sunnyvale.
