Additional Responses to Selected Questions

Question 9
I have a Master of Public Affairs which entails the study of public policy, public finance, administrative law, economics and budgeting that set me up to work at local, state or federal government and have had the privelege of working in three Ohio and three California cities, including Sunnyvale. My experience in public policy, human services administration, intergovernmental relations and human resources have all grounded me in understanding both the administrative/execution of city government as well as the political/policy aspects of city government (every position I have ever had in cities has been in the City Manager's office and has involved direct support to City Councilmembers locally as well as in their capacities to represent their cities on county, state, national and district agencies or boards).

Additionally, I have held numerous positions of leadership on professional or non-profit associations or boards which has brought me another perspective around working on volunteer, appointed or elected boards. I have also spent the last ten years training in leadership development, mentoring others who are in leadership positions and coaching leaders.

Question 10
I belive the unique combination of having academic and practical experience working for six different cities and being an expert in leadership development will offer the Council a fresh perspective and invite us all into engaging discourse and discernment around the issues of : local and regional jobs/housing balance; environmental sustainability; diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. I also believe that my academic roots and experiences with public administration which were formed thorugh a a solid belief in both good government and governmental accountability will serve to support our community's long- standing reputation for excellence. The only type of city I can imagine serving as a policy maker on is one that has a Council-Manger form of government in their Charter; this is Sunnyvale.

Question 14
My community activities to date have been from the vantage point of a resident here. I've attended numerous State of the City events, Hands on the Arts events and Heritage Museum events. As a parent, I have benefitted from the recreation activities from swimming classes to massive use of the city's parks.

Up until now, my volunteer efforts have most often tracked with the developmental stages of my children so I've been President of a parent participation preschool, served on a committee to start a region-wide alternative high school for youth, served on a Bond Advisory Committee for FUHSD and served on the FHS site committee for three years. Professionally, I was elected to serve as the President of the Municipal Management Assistant's Association of Northern California and a number of CA City Management Department committees as well as committees on the International City Management Association. More recently I served as Treasurer of the CCBA and as a 4-year member of the Parent Advisory Council for Cal Poly (specifically assisting the university's DEI, LBGQTIA and mental health programs).

Question 15
I believe we all have room to expand not only or understanding of people and cultures but also increasing our direct experience, conversations and collaborations with folks. I believe that diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging represents a journey that it necessary for us to unravel, digest, disrupt, dismantle and then figure out how to re-align, re-build, compensate and co-create a stronger set of strucutures of support. I believe we also need to be willing to get messy, individually and collectively, in the process of understanding what allyship does and does not look like.

My experience with DEI is varied and continuously evolving. I currently meet with a small pod of professional women who meet monthly to discuss where we have grown with respect to learning and engaging in our DEI journey and we both support each others' messes and encourage each others' growth edges here. I have read books and articles to facilitate my journey and have represented CCBA as a white ally to a two-day experience called "Dismantlng White Supremacy: An Unconference." I've attended several AAPI advocacy events to listen to speakers and hear stories. I've been engaged with high school and college-level groups as an advocate for the LBGQTIA+ folks for the last 6 years. I'm currently on a path to learn more about local Indigenous peoples and what it looks like to be an ally. My journey has a long way to go.

I have worked in research, policy, and advocacy roles, and I am excited to bring these skills to the City. I am passionate about social justice, and my background in public health sets me up to advocate for the health, safety, and wellbeing of Sunnyvale residents.

I want to give back to the City that raised me. After immigrating to the US, I learned English as a 2nd language at Ellis Elementary School, found my love for reading at the Sunnyvale Library, and discovered my passion for health, policy and governance at Fremont High School. I've participated in arts and sports through the Sunnyvale Community Center, and feel welcome and at home amongst the Indian cultural events year round. This City has provided a safe home to my family for years, and I want to bring my skills and passion to the City.

B.S. Biopsychology with English minor
M.P.H in Public Health--Health Services
Community Health Policy Analyst at Kaiser Permanente working on affordable housing, homelessness, youth and vaping, Green Streets, paid parental/sick leave.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Health Communications Consultant at Kaiser Permanente, serving Northern California patients and community.

I updated and maintained KP's COVID patient information site, advocated for patient needs on heart health, transgender health, and medication management, and led our department's Anti-Racism workgroup to foster an inclusive climate, equity in our workforce, and equitable health for our patients.

I have not had a chance to yet, but I would like the City to consider increasing local COVID testing sites, providing further assistance to people experiencing homelessness, and connecting low-income community members to local/regional resources.

I have been a part of Kaiser Permanente's Asian Pacific Islander Association, calling on the organization to stand Against API Hate, and redistributing funds to local API organizations. I regularly contribute to local mutual aid, redistribute my wealth, and donate clothes and supplies. I am also a member of my HOA committee, improving our water conservation processes and earthquake and emergency preparedness efforts, and building community trust and care.

Fighting for equity and justice is my life’s work because of my oppressed and privileged identities--brown, queer, female, first-generation immigrant, and cis-gender, privileged caste Hindu, and higher education among others. I hope to bring my passion for health and racial equity, my experiences at the intersections of both oppressed and privileged identities, and my community health and policy background to our communities in Sunnyvale.

No concerns.

Public service is a calling that not everyone wants or has. I have the desire and experience to serve when I can and am able to.

I spent the large majority of my adult life in public service. I have lived in Sunnyvale for over 50 years. Sunnyvale is a city where our families can enjoy life and I want to help to keep Sunnyvale a destination point for families to live, work and raise their children. My past experience as a member of the city council has given me the ability to quickly understand and work to help achieve the goals and priorities of the city. What I will bring to the city is the experience to look at the big picture of city government while being mindful of the ever-changing economy and how it will affect the services to the citizens. I will bring the ability to be flexible when needed to develop reasonable solutions to resolve difficult issues.

I believe I am the best candidate because of previous experience as a council member and Mayor of Sunnyvale. I have been a good team member, one who is willing to keep an open mind and look for viable solutions for complex issues which effect the citizens, operations and opportunities for the City of Sunnyvale. There are many important issues and decisions coming before the city council which include budget recalculation and restructuring, Moffett Park specific plan, El Camino Real Corridor specific plan, Peery Park specific plan, Caltrain Grade Separation Feasibility Study and the Downtown Specific Plan Amendment to name a few.

Education: Labor relation studies and public law at U.C. Berkeley, Golden Gate University and San Jose City College.

Experience: Eight years as a Sunnyvale Council member, 1 year as Vice Mayor and 4 years as Mayor. Chair, Charter review committee, representative for the City of Sunnyvale to ABAG, League of California Cities, US conference of Mayor for Jobs, Education Work Force, Children, Health and human Services. Serve as an alternate to VTA, Serve as chair of the subcommittee for the employment of a City Manager for Sunnyvale. I have the experience of working with the city budget.

I retired from the City of Palo Alto fire department as a Captain after serving 38 years. I served as the department public information officer and the department legislation analysis. I am currently the president of my company ANNCA, Inc. the company provides the ability for companies and individuals to grow through investment collaboration.

I have attended City Council meetings and Parks and Recreation Commission meetings. I believe itˆs been about two years since there was a in person council meeting. The times I did attend, I did not see any procedures that I would of change. The council meeting and commission meetings were conducted very professorial and efficiently.

I am a member of the board of directors of the Sunnyvale Pet Parade committee. We have successfully provided the community with a fun day of showing their pets off to the citizens of Sunnyvale. I also volunteer to help the downtown association hand out food and other items to workers who were laid off due to the pandemic.

One time there was a philosophy, America was a melting pot, we were all the same and had equal ability and access to all that was available. It took some time to understand America is not a melting pot but a mosaic. Those in elected positions must look at their community as mosaic of cultures, diversities. Those who are in positions who make decisions and provide service to citizens need to mirror the community they serve. Understanding life styles, cultures and beliefs elected officials who are open to realities and experiences of others not just their experiences and perspective will make for a better community to live in. The elected officials must encourage their citizens to take an active role in the decision making of their community.

I have no concerns

Through the span of my professional career I have had experience in all three sectors covering Government, Non-Profit, and Private/Commercial. I have been a property owner since 1998, and a past landlord (single property). Currently I'm a stay at home parent with school age children. The culmination of these experiences provides me a broad base of perspectives from which to draw from.

I approach such positions of responsibility from an obligation to be a good steward of the organization I have been entrusted to act in the interest of. I base my decisions and opinions on the totality of the circumstances, resources that may be needed for a decision and the overall impact to stakeholders in consideration.

Bachelor Degree in Business Management and Finance - San Jose State MBA/Finance - Golden Gate University
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
Basic Officer Leader Course - US Army
Captain Career Course Logistics - US Army
I bring 20 years professional experience in Financial Services, Corporate Finance, and Investment Management. I have been a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) for 18 years, now retired.

Currently I am a US Army Reserve Logistics Executive Officer with previous time as a Commander of a Quartermaster Company responsible for 160 soldiers and $53M in equipment.

I have attended (virtually) multiple Council and Commission meetings as well as watched meeting archives on YouTube. I have learned to be mindful of recorded sessions when discussing sensitive topics. An opportunity for improvement may be including and alternative cost/benefit analyses scenarios prior to making tangential decisions that diverge from the original decision request.

I have served on the Board of Directors for the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps (2006-2013), a youth based performing arts organization, and held at large and Treasurer board positions. My tenure involved improving fiscal practices and saw the rise of organizational revenues more than double from $2M to $5M. I have also volunteered for toy drives run by Dollar Stores to provide gifts for children of Army Reserve service members.

Being an ally does not mean I understand what it's like to be a part of an underrepresented group, only that I'm part of facilitating the inclusion of underrepresented groups and decisions that impact them. The US Military is among the most opportunity-leveling organizations in the nation: regardless of one's socioeconomic background, education, gender, sexual orientation, or religion everyone starts off with the same level of opportunities relative to their enlistment or commissioning point.

I was entrusted with the stewardship of these Dept. of Defense programs and changes as a Company Commander whose soldiers spanned just about every race, religion, social background and gender identity. As Company Commander, I earned hi
gh marks for personal performance and led my unit to earn above average "command climate" ranking.

I will be out for three weeks in the month of April for an extended training exercise with the Army Reserve during which time I may be able to attend virtual meetings.
