I think there are many homes still in existence that may hold some not yet identified significance in our city's history.
Perhaps we could try to somehow preserve the Fry's Storefront but repurposed. It is an important piece of Silicon Valley history. First location of the first electronics big box store! I just found out that it is too late but I had been keeping my eye on the Parish property on Crescent Ave. since it holds the beginnings of the Egg and Chicken business in Sunnyvale.
Each older property should be thoroughly studied before demolishion.

4. What motivated you to apply for this board or commission? I got very excited about the work of the Arts Commission after speaking with member Agnes Veith. She explained the goals of providing public art and the process of procuring the art. Agnes gave examples of recent acquisitions tor the Washington Pool and the Fair Oaks Park.
After our discussion, I visited the parks and both were improved by their art installations. The sea creatures at Washington Pool can spark the imagination of children as they head in to swim. For anyone seeing the octopus with different shoes on the end of each limb, expect them to laugh out loud. The playful sports figures set along the outside of Fair Oaks Park makes this space easier to find and more recognizable as a park. The sculptures draw people to the park.
I would like to be part of this work to bring more art, not just visual art, to Sunnyvale.
5. What skills or attributes can you bring to this board or commission? I have a passion for art. It may have started in childhood when my mother regularly changed the impressionist posters she would thumb tack to the walls. I was eager to gaze and talk to my mother about the art.
I am always on the lookout for exhibitions: painting, photography, sculpture, textiles and ceramics. My husband and I are members of four Bay Area art museums and have been members five others. We choose membership levels that allow us to take our children, friends. or visitors because it's great to share our excitement.
My father used to joke "Molly never saw a museum she didn't like." When planning a trip to a destination I always add in a museum or sculpture park. Sometimes a trip is just about art like our trip to New York to see four specific museums.
I have had friends thank me after time together at a museum. They felt more self assured, understood that you could have tun in an art museum and that art could be outside the museum walls.
6. The primary role of a board or commission member is to provide advice to City Council on policy issues that are within the scope of that board or commission. With this in mind, what steps would you take to effectively exercise this specific board or commission role?
As an Arts Commission member, it would be essential for me to have an understanding of the existing policy, its function, how it has been applied in the past, and how it might be applied in the future as circumstances change. In this way, I would be able to provide advice to the City Council on policy issues regarding the Arts Commission.

I seriously considered a career in art history but at that time of two foreign languages were required. A learning disability made this seem out of reach.

I worked for Kaiser for 23 years in outpatient , workmen's compensation, chronic pain clinic and home health. While I started as a staff physical therapist , I took a series of yearlong courses and early on became a clinical specialist. This involved creating new programs and tools, teaching, consulting with therapist about problems with their work.

Preserving Heritage/ Edna Aphe k
Dear David
Thank you for your kind emails.
As for the questions raised in your emai l, I am afraid I am not knowledgeab le as far as structures are concerne d.
However, I am quite fami liar with other aspects of preserving Heritage.
Beyond Structures and museum
1.Recording Memories and Preserving Herita ge
An African proverb says that when an old person dies an entire library is set on fi re. In t he proposed program I set out t o preserve who le libraries, treasured in t he minds and homes of Sunnyvale's elderly, by t he means of digital tech nologies.
Guided by a volu nteer or a librarian, Sunnyvale seniors participating in the project write digit al books and create videos based on their history . Together, the senior\s and the volunteer\ librarian, sift through and scan docume nts, pictures, including garments, and utensils, letters, notebooks, liste n and record songs and music from the senior's past and write and record a digital chapter and create a video based on t he senior's life.
The final product would then be uploaded to a designated site, (or uploaded t o YouTube) featuring Sunnyvale's diversif ied and rich history.
Project to be conducted either on line or f2f.
2. Billboards and Signs all over t he city: the city as a "Museum" Tell ing past stories, showing historical structures, and carrying OR to be scanned.
Visitors and residents scan the QR and learn about the rich heritage of the city.
3. Heritage fest ivals
These are some of my ideas about preserving heritage, wh ich I would like to share w1th you.
Best wishes
Edna

If yes, how many meetings have you attended?
NOTE: If you are applying for more than one board or commission, please reference the specific board or commission in your response to questions 4-7.
4. What motivated you to apply for this board or commission? I have been a resident of Sunnyvale for 16 years and I always wanted to get involved in volunteer activities, especially those that pertain to arts and culture. The Arts Commission is something which serves both of these purposes as not only get to volunteer my time, but get to do so for a cause that is very near and dear to my heart. In fact, seeing many of my other friends serve in the Arts Council of other cities like Fremont, San Ramon, Cupertino, inspired me to further bring my passion for performing arts into the city of Sunnyvale. Furthermore, another huge motivation for me to apply to this board or commission was the opportunity to work with and learn from many experienced Arts Council members who have the same mindset and passion for preserving and promoting arts as me.
5. What skills or attributes can you bring to this board or commission? I was a financial analyst at Thomson Reuters by profession and then turned to full time musician after coming to the USA.
Here in the USA also I have worked as Recruiter for Reqroute and have volunteered at schools and other organizations.
People skills and clear communication skills are both attributes that I am very good at. Having organized many fund raising events to help the community, through my own music school, Saphalya Music Academy, I have been able to support multiple fundraisers that have been conducted by other organizations. My capacity of leading many programs, has taught me patience to work with people and taking feedback constructively and working towards improving the quality and raising the standards of our work. As a Musician myself, I can relate to, appreciate, and promote many different aspects of performing arts and also work to bring in diversity programs to encourage the local talents. In addition to this, I also have years of experience regarding the conduction of a variety programs which brings in many different schools and backgrounds all over the Bay Area to join as one community. As part of my organization and event planning skills, I have also been able to develop my technological skills. Specifically, I am skilled in making promotional flyers and promotional videos for events using different media apps such as iMovie and Canva.
6. The primary role of a board or commission member is to provide advice to City Council on policy issues that are within the scope of that board or commission. With this in mind, what steps would you take to effectively exercise this specific board or commission role?
To effectively exercise this specific board role, I plan to reach out and bring in the young and experienced artists of Sunnyvale or all backgrounds together on behalf of the City arts Council. By understanding the role and responsibility clearly, as well as the policy of the Council clearly I plan to further support the platform and expand on this idea.
Furthermore, I plan to exercise this specific board by carefully listening to the discussion and supporting the commission to benefit the community. As someone who has been generating various different events and platforms all over the city, I am quite familiar with the importance of collaboration and reaching out to those in the community. Thus, I will ensure that I take into consideration the policy of the commision while also bringing in my expertise of event planning, networking, and organizing with the help of my fellow colleagues and peers. In addition to this, I plan to interact with everyone in the board and the community to ensure that all voices and points are being heard and taken into consideration as part of the City Council. For me, one of the most important aspects when representing a group of people, as I would be doing in this Council, is to hear and learn from all around me. Afterall, everyday is a new opportunity to learn, so through this opportunity, I hope to learn from the experienced people present in the Arts Council who are already serving the community.

Arts Commission:
We are looking for someone who has
• Interest in the visual, performing or literary arts
• Interest in the art programs of the City
• Background in visual or performing arts
1. In what ways could the City strengthen art programs in the community? Sunnyvale city is rich in diversity and contains many cultural & performing art schools all around. The city must try to actively reach, collaborate and provide an opportunity to bring these performing arts schools on one platform to showcase their talent. Not only will the younger generation who are learning these artforms relate to the purpose of learning and the importance of their art, but it will also allow the community to learn more about different cultures and different types of art.
Every culture has specific art forms that others may not know of, so by having one platform for all of Sunnyvale's diverse cultures to come together will further allow everyone to learn about and involve themselves in these different art forms and cultures. Moreover, art kindles creativity and inculcates social values for the upcoming generation. Involving teens and the youth of Sunnyvale by giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent will strengthen the art programs in the community and will also enable different arts to grow in awareness.
