Deepening Common Language:
8 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Diversity is:
The presence of people from different
backgrounds and identities.
Traits we’re born with, e.g., skin color, hair
texture, neuro differences, examples autism,
dyslexia
Elements we pick up or develop in life, religion,
politics, social clubs
9 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Equity is:
● Doing what is fair or just
● Addressing disparities
● Challenging forms of
othering
● Considering people’s
needs and circumstances
10 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Equity is not Equality
11 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Challenges with Traditional
Definition of Equity
Some Sunnyvale employees see Equity
as:
• Preferential treatment, particularly
racial preference
• Unequal treatment
• Discrimination
• Advantaging some at the expense of
others
• Quotas
12 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Access is:
Making sure services,
programs, opportunities or
activities are open to everyone.
Making sure they are available,
approachable, usable,
attainable for everyone.
13 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Language Access
14 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Physical Access
15 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Inclusion is:
• Inviting people into the process
• Having a seat at the table
• Noticing who is missing from the
conversation and inviting them
• Often entails playing by the rules of
the game
• Inclusion is often viewed in terms
of those who have been excluded

17 SEED COLLABORATIVE
Important Definitional
Distinctions
• Diversity ≠ Equity/Belonging
• Equity ≠ Equity 2.0/Belonging

groups know and use NOVA’ s services?
25 SEED COLLABORATIVE
