BACKGROUND
Many people believe that the advent of writing is the most important invention in the history of humankind. For the last 50,000 years we have been using and evolving symbols to communicate and pass on our thoughts and ideas. These ideas in turn produce new symbols which then go on to produce more and more complex ideas. The modern-day library is the focal point and storehouse of where this evolution, in the form of letters and words, continues today. It is the place where we can find every aspect of our thoughts, from scientific facts to the outer realms of fiction and illusion. With this in mind, our vision for the newly constructed Lakewood Library & Learning Center is to create a unique artwork that invites everyone, young and old, to celebrate the importance of the written word.

ENVIRONMENT /S ETTING
After visiting the site and meeting locals enjoying a Sunday afternoon in the park, we found that the park and the elementary school are such an integral part of this neighborhood. There was a wonderful feeling of community as people were having picnics, skateboarding, and refining their soccer skills. Parents and their children were coming from all parts of the peninsula to enjoy this park. Adding the new library and the learning center at this location will truly enhance the quality of life for this neighborhood and beyond.
PROPOSAL
Our sculpture proposal, titled Roots of Knowledge, consists of three quill pens fabricated in stainless steel. Each rise approximately 13’ – 14’ high and are mounted on top of a raised stand in the image of an inkwell. The design of the quill pen is abstract to harmonize with the modern
architectural design. The feather is made with ¾” stainless steel pipes spaced every 2” from each other and enclosed within a 1 ½” pipe frame. This open slotted pipe design mimics the lines of a feather and creates a light and airy feel.
We felt this was important in order to match the see-through quality of the glass walls and entrance of the building, which not only allow the sun light to come through but also create an open feeling throughout the main entry and lobby area. We want to capture and enhance this same feeling.
On the ground, there will be a paving
design of pen strokes that connect to
each quill pen. This root-like form passes
through the library’s forecourt and ends
near the main entrance door. Each root-
branch will have multiple leaves, made
from inset brass plates, growing off it. On
each brass leaf, we will etch words that
are relevant to learning, community, and
Attachment 11
Ride Art Studio www.rideartstudio.com [email protected] 415.902.0343 life. People will be able to walk around the quills and follow the design and read the words on the leaves as they make their way in and out of the library.
For a nighttime presence, a single programmable LED light will be mounted at the base of each feather quill. As the gently changing colored light cascades up and over the stainless-steel pipes, it will create a beautiful luminescent pattern.
SYMBOLISM
We chose the image of a quill pen because it represents one of the first writing utensils that has been used in many cultures and written languages. Although many cultures have different forms of writing implements, such as a reed pen, a brush and even a carving tool, the quill pen remains a universal symbolic icon of writing. It is a timeless symbol of creativity, communication and freedom of expression.
In many cultures, a feather signifies honor, trust, strength, wisdom, power and freedom. In Native American culture, warriors were awarded a feather when they won a battle or were particularly brave in war. When a feather falls to the earth, it is believed to carry all of the bird’s energy, and it is perceived as a gift from the sky, the sea, and the trees. Feathers may arrive unexpectedly but not without a purpose. In Egyptian Mythology, the feather held a prominent position, symbolizing truth, balance, and order. Feathers have an intrinsic connection to flight and thus symbolize freedom, liberation, transcending, and the pursuit of dreams. Most importantly the feather is a symbol of wisdom and knowledge.
The design on the concrete paving will include three birds in flight. These will convey the concept of ideas that take flight from a foundation of knowledge. Birds symbolizes freedom, perspective (a bird’s eye view), communication, travel (migration), grace, peace, love, hope, wisdom, and inspiration.
Birds inspired human beings to create airplanes!
The design on the concrete paving will represent the strokes drawn by the quill pen, creating tree root like branches and representing life and growth. Nourished by knowledge and wisdom, these branches seem to spread out into many directions.
Attachment 11
Ride Art Studio www.rideartstudio.com [email protected] 415.902.0343 Brass leaves embedded in the ground represent
new life, growth, and renewal. Each leaf will have
etched words such as community, diversity, love,
curiosity, strength, unity, hope, dream and more.
We’ll also include words written in different
languages and will consult with the community
regarding the choice of words and relevant languages. Being careful to represent the five most commonly used writing systems around the world, our current language choices are: Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Tagalog, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese.
PLACEMENT AND SITE:
The architecture of this library is designed to focus on the central entrance area with its open forecourt and dynamic cantilever roof. We feel that this is the most important area that could benefit from dynamic artwork to welcome children and adults to the library. Because the library is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, we want the artwork to accent the building from a distance, but not be too visually distracting. By this we mean not too big or too busy.
Each feather will be mounted on a raised base to ensure ADA requirements are met. A single up-light will be embedded at the base of each feather. For this, we will require an access (junction box) to electricity. We will coordinate with the city and the contractor to define lighting fixtures and power specifications.

DIMENSIONS AND MATERIALS

FINAL DESIGN
Design:
During the initial design phase, we will obtain all necessary documents including soil report, zoning and permits, ADA requirements and other necessary information. At the initial design phase, we will request feedback, comments, and concerns from the public and city staff. At this point, we’d like to work with the community and the city staff to collect words to be etched onto brass leaves and get input on what languages to include.
We will work with our structural engineer who will design the footings for the quill pens. Our final design phase will be conducted after our structural engineer’s review of materials and fabrication methods. The final design will be submitted, along with a detailed budget, contractor’s estimate, and updated timeline, to the public art review board and other city officials.
