CALL TO ORDER
Chair Kunz called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Bay Conference Room (Room 145) at City Hall.

Mayor Klein thanked Commissioners Besser, Wickham and Vice Chair Veitch for their years of service on the Sustainability Commission. He commended them and the Sustainability Commission for their contributions to moving the City’s sustainability initiatives forward. Ramana Chinnakotla, Director of Environmental Services, acknowledged Commissioners Besser, Wickham and Vice Chair Veitch for their years of service on the Sustainability Commission and provided key highlights on each member.

Christina Raby, Environmental Engineering Coordinator, presented an overview of the Study Issue process and timeline to the Commission and answered questions. 24-0717 PRESENTATION - Building and Transportation
Decarbonization Policy Best Practices
Commissioner Wickham provided an overview of building decarbonization policy best practices and noted a separate Commissioner presentation will be given by Chair Kunz on transportation decarbonization best practices at a later meeting date. Commissioners asked clarifying questions, and Commissioner Wickham provided answers.

24-0716 Approve the Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes of May 20, 2024
Commissioner Nabhan moved, and Commissioner Makwana seconded, a motion to approve the consent calendar with a minor spelling change to Richard Parenteau’s last name. The motion carried by the following vote:

-Commissioner Comments
Commissioner Pistone reported on a podcast episode called “The Los Angeles Leaf Blower Wars” by 99% Invisible and encouraged Commissioners to listen.
Commissioner Pistone also described an HBO special by John Oliver on deep-sea mining for Commissioners to watch.
Commissioner Parenteau voiced excitement to be on the Sustainability Commission and the opportunity to discuss topics related to climate action and

sustainability in Sunnyvale.
Commissioner Wickham welcomed Commissioner Parenteau to the Sustainability Commission and thanked the Commission for all of the accomplishments achieved during her time as a Commissioner. Commissioner Wickham also promoted the June 20 online event, Electrify Your Life Series: Local Success Stories hosted by the Sunnyvale Public Library and encouraged Commissioners and the public to attend the event.
Chair Kunz notified the Commission of the upcoming City Council public hearing item, Adopt Updates to the Climate Action Playbook and Game Plan 2028, and encouraged Commissioners to attend the meeting online or in-person to support the adoption of the item.
