A. Sunnyvaleis locatedin the SantaClara Valley which is denselypopulatedand locatedin anareaof high seismicactivities. Sunnyvaleis situatedon alluvial soils betweenSanFranciscoBay andthe SanAndreasFault zone. The City's location makesit particularlyvulnerableto damageby seismicevents. Therelativelyyoung geologicalprocessesthathavecreatedtheSanFranciscoBay Areaarestill active today. Seismically, theCity sitsbetweentwo activeearthquakefaults (SanAndreas andtheHayward/Calaveras) andnumerouspotentiallyactivefaults; B. Concernfor fire-life safetyassociatedwith gasappliancesandassociatedpiping locatedin the groundandin the buildingsincreaseswith the risk of explosionor fire if thereis a structuralfailure dueto a seismiceventconsideringtheincreasing numberof buildingsin theregion;
C. Severeseismiceventscoulddisruptcommunications, damagegasmains, andplace extremedemandsonthelimited andwidely dispersedresourcesof thePublicSafety Departmentnecessaryfor thelife safetyneedsof thecommunity; D. Over the next century, increasing levels of atmospheric greenhousegas concentratesare expectedto result in global temperatureincreases, causinga varietyof localchanges, includingextremeweatherconditions, sealevelrise, more frequentheatwavesandextendedperiodof drought. Sealevel rise asa resultof climatechangewill havea dramaticlocal impacton theCity. TheCity's northern area borders the southernend of the San FranciscoBay and is particularly vulnerableto sealevelriseandis atanincreasedrisk of flooding.
