What motivated you to apply for this
board or commission?
I love that the library is a community space. Whenever I go to the library, I see patrons young and old enjoying its resources. I enjoy that it's a welcoming and safe space. I am also really excited about the new library being opened in North Sunnyvale. I think this is long overdue to increase access to those communities. I am a big fan!
What skills or attributes can you bring
to this board or commission?
I can bring my skills in advocacy to this Board. Being a first-generation immigrant, I know the importance of having a library stocked full of multi-lingual and multicultural resources. The library was where I spent most of my free time in my youth. It was the books that the librarians introduced me to and my participation in summer reading programs at the library that accelerated my reading and English skills.

The primary role of a board or
commission member is to provide
advice to City Council on policy issues
that are within the scope of the board or
commission. What steps would you take
to effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
I would first learn the policy issues that are relevant to this role so I can be better-informed and also be able to articulate on these issues. Then I would be sure to engage in respectful dialogue and listening to the community.

Education – List college degrees,
majors and any relevant training or
experience that demonstrates your
ability to effectively serve on this board
or commission.

I have had a 15-year public school career as an educator. I also have past experience serving as a member on the Heritage Preservation Commission.

Describe your involvement in
community activities, volunteer and
civic organizations.

I have been involved with the Sunnyvale Sister City Association as a volunteer for the past 5 years. I am also a long-time member of Rotary (Redwood City club) and serve as the secretary of that club. I have also been a longtime volunteer and have previously served on the executive board of Sunnyvale Middle School PTSA.

Description Area The City has a Code of Ethics and Conduct for Elected and Appointed Officials and an Attendance Policy (7.2.19), 2 G (II) that appointed members are required to follow.

Do you have any concerns related to the
above code and policy?
No
Are you willing to accept a temporary
appointment for the remainder of an
unexpired term?
Yes

Community demographics and
technology are constantly changing.

What do you think are the principal
issues the Sunnyvale Public Library
may be addressing over the next few
years?
Census records show that the biggest shift in demographics is among the senior population. As the senior population grows, the public library will need to address this by providing more equipment, modifications, or training targeted towards this group and provide more senior services.

Also, technology threats such as malware or data breaches is another area that the library may be forced to pre-empt or take more proactive measures around. Even though the policy of Sunnyvale Library states that it is an open network provided by the City of Sunnyvale available to the general public and is NOT INHERENTLY SECURE, the library may still want to put in place more secure measures to prevent bad actors from exploiting the vulnerability of its users.

Last, but not least, there may be a decrease in public funding in the foreseeable future which will result in budget cuts.
