Safe Routes to Schools & Parks
Sunnyvale’s neighborhoods were not designed for the car volumes we see today. The resulting congestion around schools and parks causes concerns in our community about safety, air quality and access. Safer routes will encourage walking and biking which are healthier for people and better for the environment.

The schools proposed for these Safe Routes projects have a combined enrollment of 1,200 students with a high percentage of socio-economically disadvantaged families. Investing in these neighborhoods will improve overall health, safety, and connectivity.

RE: Request for Support for FY26 Community Project Funding, City of Sunnyvale– Safe Routes to Schools and Parks

Dear Senator Padilla, Senator Schiff, and Representative Khanna,

On behalf of the City of Sunnyvale, I am writing to express my support for the City of Sunnyvale’s Safe Routes to Schools and Parks Project.

This project will make walking and biking safer near schools and parks at three locations.

These infrastructure improvements align with numerous local, state and federal policies and initiatives, and have significant health, safety and environmental benefits. They also support existing capital improvements such as the Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center under construction now. Additionally, this project will invest in neighborhoods that have a high percentage of socio-economically disadvantaged families.

I am pleased to support this project and urge you to provide favorable consideration of this funding request.

Sincerely,

Larry Klein

SUBJECT: FY 2026 Congressionally Directed Spending Request from the City of Sunnyvale – Safe Routes to Schools and Parks

Dear Honorable Members of Congress:

I am writing to express my sincere support for the City of Sunnyvale’s request for funding to support the City’s Safer Routes to School and Parks projects.

Planned safety improvements include corner curb and sidewalk extensions, pedestrian safety signs and striping, ADA curb ramps, and a pedestrian hybrid-activated beacon at a busy arterial. These improvements will lead to reduced vehicle speeds and congestion, expand and connect walking and biking paths, and overall decrease negative environmental impacts. Funding for this project would be particularly timely as it would enhance access for the soon-to-be open Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center, further investing in neighborhoods that have a high proportion of socio-economically disadvantaged families.

My office has heard from numerous families, school officials, school board members, and advocates who have expressed concern about pedestrian and biker health and safety in Sunnyvale. By emphasizing the importance of active transportation for our youth and their families, children can incorporate physical activity into their daily lives and arrive at school, ready to learn.

Thank you for your kind consideration of this request. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Chief of Staff, Wendy Ho at (408) 299-5030 or via email at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Otto O. Lee

RE: FY 2025 Community Project Funding Request from the City of Sunnyvale – Safe Routes to Schools and Parks
Dear Representative Khanna:

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the nine-county Bay Area. Our current long-range Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and regional Sustainable Communities Strategy, Plan Bay Area 2050, was adopted in October 2021.

MTC submits this Letter of Support for the City of Sunnyvale’s request for $3,625,000 in Community Project Funding to make walking and biking safer near schools and parks at three locations. These infrastructure improvements align with numerous local, state and federal policies and initiatives, and have significant health, safety and environmental benefits. Additionally, we would be investing in neighborhoods that have a high percentage of socio-economically disadvantaged families. This project is consistent with and supports the implementation of Plan Bay Area 2050. Further, MTC confirms the project can be added to the regional Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) within a reasonable amount of time after award.

MTC looks forward to continued partnership with the Department of Transportation and the City of Sunnyvale to deliver this important project.

Sincerely,

Theresa Romell,
Section Director, Funding Policy and Programs
