What motivated you to apply for
this board or commission?
My wife and I are settled in Sunnyvale, and after living here for a few years I want to start giving back to my community. I have a strong passion about environmental conservation and
sustainability, and would love the opportunity to help improve Sunnyvale however I can.
What skills or attributes can you
bring to this board or
commission?
I am a trained lawyer and have a background in environmental science. My greatest strengths are my analytical and
communication skills.
The primary role of a board or
commission member is to provide
advice to City Council on policy
issues that are within the scope
of the board or commission. What
steps would you take to
effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
As a lawyer, I advise my clients every day on how to build products, handle business relationships, and navigate various state and federal laws. I would bring these same skills to this role with the added benefit of being able to lean more into my undergraduate experience.

I performed pro bono work for a few years for the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights - Bay Area chapter. When I lived in Reno, I worked with several local non-profits that served individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

Sustainability is a new and
emerging concern in many
communities. What do you think
are the primary sustainability
policy issues this commission will
be addressing over the next few
years?
I think the biggest sustainability challenges facing Sunnyvale over the next 5-10 years will be related to transportation and de-carbonizing new construction. Sunnyvale has done a great job approving new housing and commercial real estate projects. As the city becomes denser and more people come to Sunnyvale to work and/or live, transportation will become a greater area of focus, both from a planning and sustainability perspective. I think the sustainability commission will need to work very closely with the planning commission.

I think the Playbook is an incredibly helpful guide. However, I wish there was a greater emphasis on transportation as part of our sustainability goals. I also think that Strategy 6 (Adapting to a Changing Climate) should really be built into all of the other strategies, as each of the other strategies will be affected by climate change.
