What motivated you to apply for
this board or commission? I have always been interested in volunteering in some aspect of Sunnyvale's governing organizations. I feel that I have both time and energy, in this stage of my life, to contribute in a meaningful way. Visiting the library for borrowing books and attending talks has been a source of both information and joy for the past many decades when raising kids and hosting parents. I would love the library to continue to be the same source of joy for future generations. Unfortunately, with the advent of social media, library's key function may be in jeopardy. I would like to be a member of this board in order to find new and creative ways to support library's continuing growth.
What skills or attributes can you
bring to this board or
commission?
My biggest strengths are ability to strategize, execute, and organize to get the job done. I have been working as a lead software engineer for more than 35 years now, in the area of performance optimization of hardware, software and database systems. Some of the skills I can leverage include driving complex issues to resolution, leading people across teams to a common objective and being open to researching and investigating new approaches.

steps would you take to
effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
I would first spend time understanding the issue, do research to evaluate the pros and cons if they exist. Talk to stake holders and participate in discussions to evaluate the ramifications (financial, social etc.) of the issue.

community activities, volunteer
and civic organizations.
Served as the president of SACAS (South Asian Cultural Assoc of Sunnyvale) for the first year - led the organization of the Sunnyvale Diwali Mela in 2022 (dealing with the city permits and applications, and organizing vendors, volunteers, various cultural activities etc.). Also led board related activities like organizing meetings and creating bylaws for the organization.

Community demographics and
technology are constantly
changing. What do you think are
the principal issues the
Sunnyvale Public Library may be
addressing over the next few
years?
Due to widespread use of social media, reading from books and newspapers has been replaced by technology. I think this is the principal challenge - how to keep the role of library as a store of books still relevant. Embracing the technological changes to further library's role is challenging but can be done.
Our main library's infrastructure
is aging, with ongoing
maintenance issues. The 2024
library bond measure, intended
to solve those issues, failed.
What solutions do you suggest?
Unfortunately, there is no substitute for fixing structural issues and funding for limited upgrades will need to be secured.
Perhaps the vision for the library as a big structure housing myriad functions (books, meeting rooms, cafe etc) needs to be revisited.
