The members of the City Council are good listeners, ask polite questions, and are mostly well-prepared. Sunnyvale citizens are getting their money's worth.

I met once with the board on planning. The members were friendly, inquisitive, and easy-going. They took our agenda seriously and helped realized our project about two years later. I had a good experience.

Applicant Qualifications
What motivated you to apply for
this board or commission?
I like planning. I like Sunnyvale. I like complex problems to which I like to dove-tail competing interests.

What skills or attributes can you
bring to this board or
commission?
I like numbers and can tell their story simply to non-numbers people. I like bringing the best out of people.

The primary role of a board or
commission member is to provide
advice to City Council on policy
issues that are within the scope
of the board or commission. What
steps would you take to
effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
Depending on the time frame, talk to some if not all interested parties, understand their interests and then structure the issue(s) like an old-fashion telegram (succinct) for a first round consultation with the City Councilors in order to understand their positions. Then take follow their guidelines.

Education – List college degrees,
majors and any relevant training
or experience that demonstrates
your ability to effectively serve
on this board or commission.

Sunnyvale has limited vacant
land for new development. This
could increase pressure for
redevelopment of existing
developed areas. How can
Planning respond to this
situation?
Ahh! The age old dilemma: unlimited wants and limited resources.

The City has a plan and decision criteria. That's a very good start.

Our job in the community is to fill it with life, step by step on an unending journey that I hope will bring joy, peace, and variety to the community. We need to create an environment of planning certainty for our citizens who are both consumer and producer of goods and services, so that they can put life into their and our City's plans over many years.

Planning Commissioners are
often asked to consider social,
economic and environmental
issues when reviewing proposals.

How do we achieve a balanced
community?
Gather the proposals, group them, grade them in according to City plans, give each of them a priority, socialize the results, and make a decision of ranking. Make the proceedings transparent, we humans have a tendency to have blind-spot biases that others can help us see and help us act upon. Track what we have done to the 2023-31 plan.

What do you see as the greatest
land use challenges facing the
City? How do you propose
addressing them?
In our calendar-filled days, we all need breaks-moments of respite to let our thoughts wander, then refocus later. Children bursting with energy need space to play. Seniors need a slow lane to stay mentally and physically fit. Micro-communities, which I define as within a 15-minute walk of each other, need places to
meet-whether green, entertaining, or both. I really like the way Murphy Street is shaping up-a European flair I've grown to love.

Description Area View the Housing Element
Have you read the Housing
Element?
Yes
What are your thoughts on the
Housing Element? How should it
be implemented?
I spent about an hour reviewing the eight chapters of the Housing Element in a summary manner, not reading each of the
approximately 700 pages. I appreciated its broad and deep approach, especially the inclusion of opposing viewpoints. Good work.

Implementation: see previous tracked, step-by-step prioritization approach.
