Briefly describe what you learned
by watching or attending a
meeting of the City Council,
board or commission. What
improvements would you
suggest?
Attended a few Sustainability Commissions meetings since late 2024. i learned that:
- Sunnyvale has adopted a Climate Action Plan which is a 5-year plan that calls for a number of sustainability targets by 2030, with the aim to align the City's sustainability goals with CA State's targets by 2045.
- The purpose of the Commission is to understand, assess and make recommendations on priorities and policy issues.

From the few meetings i have attended in person and remotely, - I have seen the Commission intaking and asking questions to current studies and issues on certain topics (per the Action Plan schedule) but have not seen tangible outcome, recommendation or activities to arrive at recommendations from the Commission.

So it is not clear to me (and perhaps not to other Sunnyvale residents) the work and accomplishment by the Commission. - I haven't observed much/if any community participation, nor any the Commission elaborating/discussing/addressing any of those community inputs at the monthly meeting. I do not see any feedback or dialogues during or post-meeting, therefore it is also not clear to me if the community's concerns are being addressed.

Have you attended meetings of
the board(s) or commission(s) for
which you are applying?
Yes
How many meetings have you
attended?

What motivated you to apply for
this board or commission?
Sunnyvale has been my home for nearly 34 years. Sustainability and climate has been a topic dear to me particularly in the last 5-6 years. I am interested to find an avenue where I can give back and make some meaningful contribution to my home and neighborhood.

I have seen the city evolved as the demographics change over the years - both residents and businesses - and the changing appearance, infrastructure, public services, etc to accommodate the growing needs. Sunnyvale seems to be very much at the leading edge of the sustainability effort. There is still much to be done and I am keen to support the action plan.

What skills or attributes can you
bring to this board or
commission?
20+ years spent in technology as a business executive,
entrepreneur and tech investor. Currently an investor & advisor to tech startups in energy, sustainability, climatetech, circular economy, AI & web3 technologies.

Previously in corporate strategy, corporate development, operations & business development from early stage startup to Fortune 150. I believe my hands-on experience in management, operations, finance, marketing, business development, market research and my keen interests in climate, circular economy and sustainability will contribute positively to the Sustainability Commission.

The primary role of a board or
commission member is to provide
advice to City Council on policy
issues that are within the scope
of the board or commission. What
steps would you take to
effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
1) To better understand the current gaps in developing sound policies and in achieving our target goals (quarterly, annually...) 2) To effectively communicate outside of meetings with other commission members and/or Council members to learn about their perspectives, discuss ideas/actions and collaborate. 3) To stay updated and expand the vision around a "sustainable city" by learning from other advanced sustainability programs, successful or failed.
4) To objectively listen to inputs and concerns from the broad community through regular participation in public events.

Board or Commission-Specific Questions
Sustainability Commission
Category One: I’m a Sunnyvale
resident.

Yes
Sustainability is a new and
emerging concern in many
communities. What do you think
are the primary sustainability
policy issues this commission will
be addressing over the next few
years?
Based on the the 6 strategies outlined in the Game Plan 2028, continuously monitor the progress of the "Plays" to ensure the City are being rolling out and metrics are on track toward the 56x30 and 80x50 plan. If the Plays are off track for various reasons, study, report, recommend adjustments or changes in policies to stay and get back on target.

Description Area View the Climate Action Playbook
Have you read the above version
of the Climate Action Playbook?
Yes

What are your thoughts on the
Playbook? How might the actions
("Plays") be improved?
The Playbook is a very comprehensive strategic plan with the appropriate level of details for the community to understand the City's goals and activities. While there are quantitative targets for the Plays, the contributions of the "Next Moves" are not quantified and there is not a "roll up" view to see how well the Moves do with respect to the targets.

It may be interesting as a comparison to the 2023 Playbook, to break down the the contributions behind each Next Move, perhaps notifying and justifying to the community that a Next Move will continue in the next cycle or be retired.
