Applicant Qualifications
What motivated you to apply for
this board or commission?
I'm passionate about equality and representation and have loved living in Sunnyvale because we have one of the most diverse and supportive communities in the country. As our community has faced increased attacks against diversity initiatives and equity policy I want to help ensure that we continue to be a guiding light for other communities around the nation.
What skills or attributes can you
bring to this board or
commission?
I have experience managing a local non-profit (the Digital Game Museum) and have been around local politics my entire life. I grew up with family and friends who were active in local government as county supervisors, campaign managers, activists, and elections officials. I also hold a masters degree in international policy and governance which is focused on human centered policy and technology - which will be critical as we continue to see expansion of technology as a factor driving social policy. Professionally I work in the cybersecurity and governance sector as a product manager and have extensive experience in translating regulations and policy into action and outcomes for individuals.
The primary role of a board or
commission member is to provide
advice to City Council on policy
issues that are within the scope
of the board or commission. What
steps would you take to
effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
The key thing would be to provide concise and actionable recommendations to the City Council based on the needs of the community.I would work together with my fellow commission members to understand the situation on the ground in the community, the policy and political landscape outside of our community at the state and national level, and work to find a reasonable and responsible path forward for recommendations that will directly impact our community. Then translate those recommendations into actionable policy guidance. I would lean into existing policy both because policy should evolve logically, but also from a tactical perspective to limit challenges in adopting any new or changed policies or positions.

Describe your involvement in
community activities, volunteer
and civic organizations.
I am the acting director and a board member at the Digital Game Museum here in town. We work to collect and archive the history of digital game development in the Valley through working with employees of the early game industry to collect their stories and physical artifacts of the work they did to build the industry. I have also volunteered with Santa Clara county at our local vote centers every election since 2020, always in a Sunnyvale vote center. I am passionate about this volunteer work because it's so critical to the continual function of our government. I try to attend the town hall events that our rep Ro Khanna hosts whenever I can and am actively engaged as a citizen when it comes to contacting my elected representatives or providing comment to groups like the FCC, FTC and others when those opportunities arise around areas I'm passionate about. I've also spoke at meetings of the Santa Clara County Board on the importance of human rights in the space of policing and incarceration.

What do you think are major
equity challenges facing the
Sunnyvale community?
Like most of the country wealth and housing security inequality are major challenges we're facing. Additionally, the attacks from the federal government on funding for diversity and equity initiatives is going to continue to cause additional stress on already marginalized communities and Sunnyvale is going to have to do even more to ensure the safety and security of those folks.
We already do a great job of celebrating diversity in our community, but we're going to have to take more defensive measures to keep the great progress we've made from being rolled back.

Describe your experience working
with historically marginalized
communities. How have your
actions benefited these
communities?
Growing up in Michigan as a child of middle eastern immigrants I saw first hand how racism and othering people can impact communities. Both of my parents were public school
administrators so I was exposed to service at a very young age, especially with underserved families in rural areas. I've kept that sense of service throughout my life. At Digital Game Museum we established programs to work with schools to bring in kids from underserved communities to learn about accessioning (checking in artifacts) and the importance of archiving history. At Guidewire I served on the ONYX employee resource group and ran the media club where I worked with a group of other employees to select movies featuring powerful black characters and stories and then lead guided discussions about the themes of the films. My current job at Center for Internet Security focuses on providing cybersecurity services to underserved communities though developing tools and mechanisms to bridge the gap between resources and historical marginalization to ensure that those folks have access to high quality tools to help secure their
communities. I also am active in the IDEA Alliance, our diversity and inclusion group. I host our media group which focuses on films or readings on diversity topics ranging from LGBTQIA+ topics to Land Back and native rights initiatives. I've worked to bring in speakers on these topics to present their real life experience to our team and drive insightful conversations that highlight the importance of diversity and elevating marginalized voices.
