Briefly describe what you learned
by watching or attending a
meeting of the City Council,
board or commission. What
improvements would you
suggest?
By watching the City Council meetings online, I learned how local government operates and how decisions are made to address community issues. I saw how council members discussed
proposals, listened to public comments, and balanced differing opinions before reaching a conclusion. It helped me understand the importance of civic engagement and how policies directly impact residents.

One improvement I would suggest is making the discussions more accessible to the public, such as by summarizing key points at the end of each agenda item or providing clearer visual aids. This would help community members better follow along and stay informed about local decisions.

First Choice Human Relations Commission
Applicant Qualifications
What motivated you to apply for
this board or commission?
I was motivated to apply for the Human Relations Commission because I'm passionate about promoting inclusivity, empathy, and understanding within my community. I believe that fostering strong human connections and addressing issues like
discrimination, equity, and cultural awareness are essential for building a more united city. I want to contribute my perspective as a student and community member to help bridge gaps
between different groups and support initiatives that make Sunnyvale a more welcoming and compassionate place for
everyone.

What skills or attributes can you
bring to this board or
commission?
I bring strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills that I've developed through my involvement in clubs,
volunteering, and community service. I'm an empathetic listener who values diverse perspectives and believes in finding common ground through respectful conversation and communication. My experience in advocacy and public speaking has helped me express ideas clearly and work effectively in group settings. I'm also organized, dependable, and passionate about promoting fairness and inclusion, qualities that I believe align well with the goals of the Human Relations Commission.

The primary role of a board or
commission member is to provide
advice to City Council on policy
issues that are within the scope
of the board or commission. What
steps would you take to
effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
To effectively serve in this role, I would start by thoroughly understanding the issues and policies within the Human Relations Commission commission through research, meeting materials, and community input. I would actively listen to different perspectives, collaborate respectfully with other members, and base my recommendations on facts, fairness, and community impact. I'd also engage with residents to understand their concerns and ensure their voices are represented. Finally, I would communicate ideas clearly and thoughtfully to City Council, helping shape policies that strengthen inclusion and mutual respect in our community.

your ability to effectively serve
on this board or commission.

I am currently a high school student with strong academic standing and a deep interest in social issues, community engagement, and public service. Through my involvement in organizations such as the Red Cross, HOSA, Robotics, and Speech and Debate, I've gained experience in leadership, advocacy, and communication, skills that are directly relevant to the Human Relations Commission. I've also participated in community outreach and awareness campaigns focused on humanitarian law and inclusivity, which have strengthened my understanding of diversity, empathy, and civic responsibility.

Describe your involvement in
community activities, volunteer
and civic organizations.

I've been actively involved in several community and volunteer organizations that focus on service, leadership, and advocacy. As president of HOSA (Future Health Professionals), I help organize events that promote health awareness and leadership among students. Through the American Red Cross, I serve on the International Humanitarian Law Youth Action Campaign and the National Support Team onboarding team and Youth Executive board, where I educate others on humanitarian issues and assist in welcoming new members. What do you think are major
equity challenges facing the
Sunnyvale community?
One major equity challenge facing the Sunnyvale community is the growing socioeconomic divide, especially in areas like housing affordability and access to resources. Many families struggle to keep up with the rising cost of living, which can limit opportunities for education, healthcare, and community participation. Another challenge is ensuring that all cultural and ethnic groups feel equally represented and heard, given Sunnyvale's diversity.

Language barriers and differences in access to information can sometimes make it harder for residents to engage with city programs or express their needs. Addressing these issues through inclusive communication, community outreach, and fair policy decisions is essential to maintaining Sunnyvale's strong and connected community.

Describe your experience working
with historically marginalized
communities. How have your
actions benefited these
communities?
Through my work with the American Red Cross, I've had the opportunity to advocate for and educate others about historically marginalized communities impacted by conflict and humanitarian crises. As part of the International Humanitarian Law Youth Action Campaign, I helped raise awareness about the protection of civilians during war and the importance of equality under humanitarian law. I've also supported outreach projects that promote inclusion and understanding across cultural and social groups. These experiences have allowed me to amplify
underrepresented voices, encourage empathy among peers, and contribute to a more informed and compassionate community.
