RT safe bicycling with Hollenbeck buffered bike lanes
Honorable Sunnyvale City Council,
W
e, the undersigned organizations, voice our strong support for buffered bike lanes on Hollenbeck Avenue from Danforth Drive to Alberta Avenue to connect to existing bike lanes and for removing parking. There is sufficient parking in driveways, garages, and nearby side streets.

Convenience should not take precedence over saving lives.

Hollenbeck is a key north-south corridor in Sunnyvale and serve s many important destinations
like our library, city hall, downtown Sunnyvale, many schools, and destinations in Cupertino. It is especially important for students attending Cumberland Elementary School as it is a primary corridor for them to get to school. Requiring kids riding bikes to merge into the travel lane with cars going 30-40 mph is just too dangerous for these novices. Putting a dedicated buffered bike lane on both sides will significantly improve safety.

Buf
fered bike lanes on Hollenbeck will:
● significantly improve safety for all road users, especially school children, ● reduce greenhouse gases (50% of local em issions are from transportation), ● reduce air pollution,
● reduce the cost of road m aintenance, since cars put much more wear and tear on roads than pedestrians and cyclists,
● increase equity,
● increase physical and mental health, and
● prom ote community with people meeting each other . People walking and biking often say “Hi!” to each other whereas those driving usually do not.

W
e need a fully connected network of safe, green, complete streets across our entire city so residents and visitors can get to wherever they need to go without needing to drive a motor vehicle. Please support buffered bike lanes on Hollenbeck and the removal of street parking.

Sincerely
,
Paul Besser, Hans Bernhardt,
& Nick Brosnahan
