RE: Req
uest for Support for FY27 Community Project Funding, City of Sunnyvale - Iris Avenue Safe Routes to School
Dear Senat
or Padilla, Senator Schiff, and Representative Khanna,
On behalf
of the City of Sunnyvale, I am writing to express my support for the City of Sunnyvale’s Iris Avenue Safe Routes to School project.

This pr
oject will make major infrastructure improvements to Iris Avenue, a two -lane residential collector street. By constructing intersection corner bulb -outs, ADA - compliant curb ramps, and stormwater landscape improvements, the project will make the road way safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. With two elementary schools and two neighborhood parks accessed via Iris Avenue, these improvements will be critical in reducing vehicle speeds in areas with high pedestrian and cyclist activity and improve the area to ensure sidewalks and crossings remain clear and safe during rainy weather. The project aligns with numerous local, state, and federal policies and initiatives and will deliver significant health, safety, and environmental benefits.

RE: Letter of S
upport for the Iris Avenue Safe Routes to School Project Dear Senator Padilla, Senator Schiff, and Representative Khanna:

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the nine-county Bay Area. Our current long-range Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and regional Sustainable Communities Strategy, Plan Bay Area 2050, was adopted in October 2021.

MTC submits this letter of support for the City of Sunnyvale’s request for Congressionally Directed Spending/Community Project Funding for the Iris Avenue Safe Routes to School project. Iris Avenue is a community connector providing access to elementary schools and nearby parks. The project will make key crossings safer and more welcoming for all users and will include safety and traffic-calming measures to address high-priority needs identified in the City’s Active Transportation Plan.

This project is consistent with and supports the implementation of Plan Bay Area 2050.

Further, MTC confirms the project can be added to the regional Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) within a reasonable amount of time after award.

If you have any questions regarding our support for this project, please contact me at (415) 778-6772 or Mark Dedrick, MTC’s Washington Representative, at (202) 494-3618.

Sincerely,
Theresa Rom
