What motivated you to apply for
this board or commission?
Sustainability:
I am very passionate for bringing change that will positively affect my community and its surrounding environment and therefore would like to serve as a part of the Sustainability Commission.
Sustainability is something I truly love and enjoy. I have gone to the Earth day fair every year (not just for the cute fluffy rabbits) near the City Hall. And, going to there makes me realize how important sustainable behaviors are in our everyday life, and I now have an interest in learning more about how technology may be utilized to minimize waste. As far as at-home hobbies go, I grow mint plants, attempt to create Starbuckish beverages, and customize reusable sprouts bags.
What skills or attributes can you
bring to this board or
commission?
I enjoy public speaking and feel confident sharing ideas in group settings, especially because I take drama at school, which has helped me become comfortable speaking in front of others and expressing ideas clearly. At the same time, I make sure I'm listening just as much as I'm talking. I'm organized and like helping teams stay focused and on track. Through the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety's Explorers program, I've learned how to work under pressure, communicate clearly, and handle conflicts calmly and respectfully. That experience has shown me how important teamwork and accountability are, especially when decisions impact other people.

effectively exercise this specific
board or commission role?
To effectively serve in this role, I would start by reviewing meeting materials so I understand the issues before giving input.
I'd listen closely to different perspectives, especially members who are affected, and ask questions if something isn't clear. I'd focus on solutions that are fair, practical, and in line with the commission's goals. When giving advice to the City Council, I'd think about how decisions impact the wider Sunnyvale community and try to approach every discussion with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

I'm currently a 9th grader with a 4.0 GPA at Fremont High School.
I take drama, which has helped me build confidence in public speaking and expressing ideas clearly. I'm also a part of the Explorers program, where I've learned teamwork and
conflict-resolution skills that I can bring to the commission. I don't have a lot of experience yet but I am willing to learn and adapt.

I'm was formerly an intern for Rose Cart Florist where I promoted their business on social media and am currently an intern for Athlete HQ where I research athlete-related injuries and create informative Instagram carousel posts.

are the primary sustainability
policy issues this commission will
be addressing over the next few
years?
These are some of the problems that would require attention:
minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases, developing a transportation system using public transport and electric cars, and preparing for the effects of climate change such as heat and drought. Some of the other matters that the commission could tackle include minimization of waste and facilitating community involvement in sustainability initiatives.

What are your thoughts on the
Playbook? How might the actions
("Plays") be improved?
The plays could be improved by focusing more on community involvement. It could include more hands-on activities that people can easily join, like neighborhood clean-ups, tree planting events, recycling drives, local workshops, and programs to teach the younger generation more about sustainability. Clear
communication and outreach to different groups could also help more people get involved. Giving residents more chances to participate and share feedback would make the actions more inclusive and effective.
