Shared Ground: A Totem for Sunnyvale’s Community
Project Overview
Faducci proposes the creation of a vertical sculptural totem honoring threatened and endangered animal species native to the Sunnyvale region. The work will be installed at the Sunnyvale Community Grounds, where it will serve as both a landmark and a reflection point—highlighting the interconnected care of human and non-human members of the community.

The totem will present a stacked, vertical composition of regional species, rendered in durable materials suitable for public gathering spaces. The form will be accessible, tactile, and legible from a distance, while offering moments of quiet discovery up close.

Interpretive signage and integrated text will be included to identify the species.

Concept and Intent
Community centers are places of shared responsibility: places where people gather to learn, heal, celebrate, and care for one another. This sculpture extends that ethic of care beyond the human sphere, recognizing that the health of a community is inseparable from the health of its land, water, and wildlife.

The animals represented—species that live alongside Sunnyvale’s residents yet are increasingly vulnerable—will be depicted not as relics or warnings, but as living presences. The vertical totem format suggests continuity across time: past, present, and future, stacked in balance rather than hierarchy.

By situating the sculpture at a community center, the artwork becomes part of daily life rather than a destination object. Children, families, seniors, and visitors will encounter it in the course of ordinary routines, reinforcing the idea that stewardship begins with awareness and proximity.

Site: Sunnyvale Community Center
The proposed location at a Sunnyvale Community Grounds is central to the project’s meaning. Community centers function as civic hearts—spaces that welcome all ages, cultures, and abilities. Installing the totem here aligns the artwork with values of inclusion, care, and shared responsibility.

Placed at the plaza, or gathering area, the sculpture will:
• Act as a visual anchor and meeting point
• Encourage reflection without interrupting circulation • Support educational programming and informal learning • Create opportunities for intergenerational conversation The work will be designed to complement existing landscaping and architecture, with scale and materials selected to feel grounded and approachable rather than monumental.

Materials and Fabrication
Faducci proposes the use of long-lasting public art materials such as:
• Fabricated steel treated to prevent corrosion
• Hand sculpted pigmented concrete
• Sealant to protect the sculpture from graffiti
Surface treatments will be chosen for durability and safety. The sculpture will require minimal maintenance and meet all applicable safety and longevity standards.

Community Engagement
Where appropriate, Faducci welcomes collaboration with local educators, environmental groups, and community members. Interpretive signage or integrated text will be included to identify the species and their habitats, reinforcing the sculpture’s educational role without overwhelming the visual experience.

Artist Statement
Faducci’s work explores memory, place, and the quiet relationships between people and their environments. This project reflects a belief that public art should not instruct, but invite attention—creating space for care, curiosity, and shared responsibility.

Conclusion
Shared Ground: A Totem for Sunnyvale’s Community is envisioned as a lasting symbol of connection—between human and animal, built environment and natural systems, present needs and future stewardship. Located at a Sunnyvale Community Grounds the sculpture affirms that caring for one another also means caring for the life that surrounds us.

Faducci respectfully submits this proposal for consideration and looks forward to the opportunity to contribute to Sunnyvale’s public art landscape.
