Mr. Newton provided an explanation of the item and requested Council approval of Resolution No. 25-6440. He added that the Lassen High School has since come forward stated that there is a commitment there of their contribution from $5,500 to $8,000. He stated that the County has also been contacted and there may be some funding to assist in this year's season.
David Teeter, past President of the HLVRA, thanked the City Council for taking on this item as there are many in the community who are not in support of it.
Council Member Parrish stated that he does not want to set a precedence for future years. He added that he hopes the County matches what the City pays. He added that he is not comfortable with funding this project if he is not aware of what may not be funded in the future due to providing funding for the pool.
Mayor Schuster stated that the current funding only goes through 2029 and there needs to be a discussion including the County and the HLVRA Board.
Mr. Newton added that this is also the final year in the agreement between the high school and the HLVRA for the swim team. He stated that there are other items that would also need to be addressed related to contracts and amendments and those contracts being ratified by the City and County. He added that now would also be a good opportunity to discuss the funding option that Council Member Bortle mentioned in a recent online posting.
Council Member Bortle stated that the JPA exists, and it is a separate agency. The question is, how does the JPA obtain money for the operations of the pool. Does the community want to fund it as a community asset and make it a special district funded by tax dollars. 25-6440.pdf
