2023-24 YC Committee and Liaison Summary Report
Name of committee: Youth Leadership Summit Committee
Purpose: To create the 2024 Youth Leadership Summit for youth living in the Thousand Oaks area.
Frequency of meetings: At least once a month from November until March/the date of the Summit.
Summary/ highlights of committee activities for FY2023-24: The YLS Committee of the Youth Commission for the 2023-2024 session worked alongside Thousand Oaks City staff to create the 2024 YLS. First, the committee decided on logistics such as the summit date, location, format, and student application modifications. Additionally, Commissioners were tasked with revision assignments, including updating the contact list for community leaders, invitation letter for community leaders, letter for schools, and acceptance letters for students.
Afterwards, the committee and staff worked together to advertise the summit via flyer. Commissioners also contacted community leaders and potential keynote speakers for the event. After receiving around 60 applications, Commissioners and staff liaisons reviewed student applications, decided admittances, and emailed acceptances. During this time, Commissioners also worked with staff liaisons to plan “swag bags” for summit participants and later to assemble the bags after receiving the items. The swag bag included a notebook, pen, city stickers, and a small city tote bag. Finally, committee members explained summit procedure and table assignments to the rest of the Commission. The summit was held successfully at the Kavli Founder’s Room on March 6th, 2024, with roughly 80 adult and youth attendees.
