G
ood evening, Council Members. My name is Kinsie Flame and I am here today as a parent and a concerned member of our community.

I want to express my deep concern about the proposed policy changes that would result in the removal of several crossing guards throughout our city. Crossing guards are not just helpful — they are a critical part of our children’s daily lives and the safety of our neighborhoods.

When a crossing guard is present, there is a visible and tangible sense of safety. Their presence calms traffic, signals to drivers to be alert, and most importantly, gives children and families the confidence to walk to school without fear. They are more than just employees; they are trusted community members who show up rain or shine to protect our kids.

Road safety is not the school district’s area of expertise. Shifting responsibility or cost to the schools is not only unfair — it’s irresponsible. Traffic infrastructure and pedestrian safety fall squarely within the city’s jurisdiction.

I urge the council to consider two alternative paths:

Option A: Contract directly with the crossing guard service provider to gather accurate and complete statistical data. Then, provide families with assurance that there will be a crossing guard at every designated crossing — not just some, and not just on certain days. Families deserve consistency and transparency and revisit the issue next year with honest and true information.

Option B: If the city still plans to remove crossing guards, then use the savings to fully upgrade those intersections to meet safety standards. That includes flashing beacons, improved signage, better visibility, and appropriate traffic-calming measures. If we are removing the human element, then we must ensure the infrastructure is prepared to take its place.

Crossing guards may seem like a small piece of the puzzle — but to our children, they are the frontline of safe passage. Please do not make this decision lightly. K
