RESOLUTION NO. 2024-23

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF

TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA, APPROVING AND FORMALLY

RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF JUNE AS PRIDE MONTH
WHEREAS, in June of 1969, the Stonewall Inn uprising transpired, pioneering the recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) rights. The following year in June of 1970, the first Gay Pride march was held in honor of the historical events that occurred at Stonewall Inn. Thereon, the month of June has been recognized as Pride Month in celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community and queer history; and WHEREAS, on June 11, 2019, the Torrance City Council adopted its first Proclamation that declared the month of June as Pride Month in the City of Torrance; and WHEREAS, on January 20, 2021, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. issued an executive order preventing and combating discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation, stating "Every person should be treated with respect and dignity and should be able to live without fear, no matter who they are or whom they love;" and on March 31, 2021, proclaiming the day as Transgender Day of Visibility, to honor and celebrate the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities, recognizing their generations of struggle, activism, and courage; and
WHEREAS, the fight for dignity and equality for LGBTQIA+ people is reflected in the tireless dedication of advocates and allies who strive to forge a more inclusive society by spurring sweeping progress of changing hearts and minds and by demanding equal treatment under our laws, from our courts, and in our politics; and
WHEREAS, the City of Torrance is committed to the notion that all people should be treated fairly and with respect, champions of this cause at home and abroad are upholding the simple truth that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex and asexual rights are human rights and we recognize that all people in our community, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, sex, place of origin, age, religion, faith, spiritual affiliation, ability, size, and socio-economic background should feel both supported and valued by our community.
