P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, Billy C. Slonecker was born in 1925 in Laredo, Missouri, and in 1931, his family moved westward, eventually settling in Torrance, where he would build a life of service, dedication, and honor; and
WHEREAS, at the age of 18, Billy C. Slonecker proudly enlisted in the 8th Air Force, serving as a Tail Gunner aboard the B -17 Flying Fortress in the European Theater during World War II; and
WHEREAS, on his 31st mission, during a courageous air raid over Berlin, Billy was wounded in combat and was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, upon returning home, Billy C. Slonecker began working as a groundskeeper at Torrance Park and soon married Virginia, his beloved wife of 66 years, with whom he built a loving family; and
WHEREAS, in 1950, Billy joined the Torrance Fire Department, where he served his community with great dedication for 31 years, including seven years as Fire Chief, exemplifying leadership, commitment, and public service; and
WHEREAS, Billy C. Slonecker is blessed with a legacy that includes three children, five grandchildren, and six great -grandchildren, who continue to honor his values and achievements.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, George K. Chen, Mayor of the City of Torrance , California, do hereby proclaim Mr. Billy C. Slonecker at the blessed age of 100, as
CENTENARIAN OF THE CITY OF TORRANCE
and wish him a continued long life, prosperity, and the esteem of the entire community for a distinguished and incredible life.
