Building a robust local economy requires that focus is put first and foremost on the velocity of money propagated through local endeavors.
To truly achieve long term economic development, it is imperative that the city shift focus on providing opportunities for more reliable, smaller scale local business.
Policies that would enable us to have a stronger city would be such things as expanding mixed use zoning to residential areas, removing parking minimum requirements for properties, investing in public transportation such as cost effective mass transit as well as redesigning spaces to be safe for biking and walkability, promoting efforts to increase shared spaces in the cities design (parks being a good example as mentioned), and allowing for greater density.
When done correctly, this would act as a huge windfall for the city that would allow for more reinvestment in the local community and city infrastructure.
Focusing on outsourcing tax dollars and monolithic events such as the Olympics has been proven to be disastrous to local communities, and contributes towards driving up poverty rates for members of the community.
