P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual national campaign which started in 1985 to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer and second leading cause of cancer death, after lung cancer, in women in the United States. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer by hosting educational and interactive activities throughout the month, while emphasizing the importance of annual mammograms for women ages 45 and older, the most effective screening tool for early detection; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society also sponsors the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, a powerful and inspiring event that brings the community together to honor the courageous individuals who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, remember those who have lost their battle, and raise critical funds to support groundbreaking research and vital patient programs; and
WHEREAS, due to advancements in early detection and treatment, breast cancer death rates in the United States have declined by approximately 44% from 1989 through 2023, underscoring the importance of ongoing awareness, education, and community engagement; and
WHEREAS, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages everyone to make healthy lifestyle choices such as eating a healthy diet, getting regular physical activity and reducing the consumption of alcohol. These choices can help reduce their breast cancer risk.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, G EORGE K. CHEN , as Mayor of the City of Torrance, California, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2025 as:
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
in the City of Torrance and urge all citizens to take part in activities and observances designed to increase awareness and understanding of breast cancer, its human impact, and the work of the American Cancer Society.
