A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA
RECOGNIZING THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE
HISTORIC TORRANCE WOMAN’S CLUBHOUSE.
WHEREAS, the Torrance Woman’s Club, organized in 1921 by civic-minded women dedicated to the advancement of culture, education, and community welfare, has served as a cornerstone of volunteerism and public service in the City of Torrance for over a century; and
WHEREAS, in 1924, the Torrance Woman’s Club held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new $17,500 clubhouse on Engracia Avenue in the heart of Old Torrance, which was completed in 1925 to serve as the club’s home, and a versatile community gathering space, and has since remained an enduring symbol of civic pride and community spirit;
WHEREAS, the Torrance Woman’s Clubhouse, a beautifully preserved 1920s Spanish Mission–style structure with a white stucco exterior, red tile roof, and hardwood floors, includes a 3,000-square-foot main hall with stage, large foyer, and banquet kitchen, and has long served as a gathering place for weddings, receptions, banquets, concerts, community meetings, and other cultural events; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, from 1941 to 1943, the United Service Organizations (USO) utilized the clubhouse to support military personnel, reflecting the Club’s deep commitment to service members and civic engagement—a tradition that continues through ongoing community programs and sponsorships; and
WHEREAS, in 1988, the Torrance Historical Society designated the clubhouse as a historic site, honoring its architectural significance and its role in the City’s cultural heritage, while the Club’s House Committee continues to preserve the Mission-era décor and charm of the 1920s; and
WHEREAS, on October 23, 2025, the Torrance Woman’s Club will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its historic clubhouse with a ribbon cutting and dessert reception, marking a century of fellowship, civic leadership, and service to the Torrance community.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Torrance does hereby recognize the 100th anniversary of the Torrance Women’s Clubhouse located at 1422 Engracia Avenue.
