I mentioned the same thing in an email to Cheryl and Eli. This is a serious public safety matter, at the core of the City's responsiblities to provide. It might take some time to sort everything out and allow the legal course to play out, so we'll keep the communication channels open through the duration.
Eli's been dealing with other issues this morning, but plans to get caught up on this incident and coordinate efforts this afternoon. I'm doing my outreach as well. All hands are on deck.

Yes, please consider this a formal complaint to the city. I don’t what all that means, but I think this is a very serious matter of public safety. If you need additional forms, let us know.
As several people have said, this frightening incident could have been so much worse, either if there hadn’t been people around to help fight off the attacking dog or if, god forbid, the target had been a child. I think a smaller dog might have been killed; Stella might easily have been killed if there hadn’t been others who helped us fight back.

This was not a case of a dog off-leash, but a resident animal who got out of a “secure yard” — not for the first time — and attacked from a distance. The result was one very seriously injured dog, one partially “amputated” finger (as the ER put it) and a second human casualty. Brenda is going to see her doctor about the puncture wounds in her leg this afternoon.
We are more than happy to provide any further details or whatever assistance we can. We appreciate that our town takes this seriously.

I was disturbed and deeply concerned when I heard about the incident that happened to you, Brenda, and Stella last night. I wish you all a speedy recovery, and am hopeful that the incident gets the attention it deserves from every agency involved.
That said, I consider this email to be a formal complaint/incident report filed with the City. If that isn't the case, please let me know.
I'm looking for clarification because I don't want to complicate the situation by asking you to submit it again on a 'complaint form'. The City accepts complaints in several formats, and if it is a formal complaint I want to ensure it receives that level of attention.
As Cheryl mentioned, the City takes this matter very seriously and is doing its diligence this morning by gathering all the details and convening with everyone involved.

Hi, Cheryl.
You may have heard that Stella, Brenda and I were attacked by a pit bull at Ocean and Wagner at about 2:30 p.m.
yesterday. All three of us were bitten.
Stella spent the rest of the day at the vet. The dog bit off the first joint of my right ring finger, so I spent the rest of the day at the Mad River ER. Brenda was bitten in the left leg and was knocked to the ground, banging her head and back.
This was nit a “normal” random dog fight. The dog charged us from all the way at the end of Wagner, and then, when
several of us managed to get her off Stella, she chased Stella onto Edwards to attack her again in front of the B&B. If several of us had not jumped on the dog and held her down, Stella could have been killed. Happily, no one else was bitten as far as I know. There were many witnesses, and without their help, it could have been much worse.
Deputy Rob Patton of Animal Control has been investigating.
The dog’s owner is Marc something, and lives at the end of Wagner. His dog is a dangerous animal, known to his
neighbors, who have previously complained. The dog should be removed from town. If Stella had been a child, this would have ended much more tragically.
The dog is still in the owner’s house on Wagner, on a 10-day quaratine. We don’t know yet about the dog’s rabies
vaccination status.
We intend to press whatever charges we can, and will ask the owner to cover our medical costs, which are already
significant.
If there is anything we can do to assist the city in dealing with this dog, please let us know.

Hi Maria,
I'm as disturbed about this as you. The City is investigating every angle of the incident right now, along with the County Sheriff and Animal Control.
The thing that appears to distiguish this incident from the poodle attack is that the dog is apparently a resident that escaped the tenant's premise. By definition that dog would be defined as 'at large', in violation of the Animal Ordinance within the Municipal Code.
The city had no knowledge of this dog, let alone the person it belonged to. I discovered today that Wagner Street residents have had previous incidents with this dog - none of which were brought to the City's attention until now.
The Mayor, Council, City Manager, and myself are united to ensure the incident is fully investigated and all regulations are reviewed and applicable enforcement measures taken.
Regarding signage. I'll forward this to Public Works as well so we can start reviewing options out there to get the message across. I believe we can add these signs to the pet waste stations at minimum, for starters.

Hi Gabe,
I'm pretty freaked out about the latest dog attack yesterday. I'm still hypervigilant since the incident with Kathrin's dog and the 10 poodles! I no longer feel safe on the beaches or the Head with all the unleashed dogs. From what Kathrin told me recently, signs were to go up around town and at the trail heads about our leash laws with a $500 fine for unleashed dogs. I'm terrified to take my dog anymore to the beaches, and now I can't walk safely in the street? I really hope this was not Kyle's dog! Why wasn't this dog on Wagner St. impounded? Quarantined at home? Only to see if it has rabies? Sounds like the dog needs to be put down. Kids live on that street and it could prove fatal if that dog gets out again. Can the sign issue be put on the next City Council meeting's agenda? Thanks, Gabe, sorry to rant but this is really frightening!!!

To Whom It May Concern:
RE: Trinidad Pit Bull attack
As a resident of Humboldt County, retired Public Health Physician and dog lover, I like many am horrified at the aggressive dog attacks taking place nationwide and more recently in Trinidad.
Pit Bulls, aka "Staffordshire Terriers" and other mixes bred for violent fighting have significantly increased the risk of serious injury or death to ordinary law abiding citizens.
I concur full with Mr. Ted Pease' demand that any dog that has viciously attacked another dog or human, especially unprovoked, should be euthanized. This is just common sense.
There has been a false narrative pushed by Pit Bull advocates such as "Best Friends Animal Society" that these Pit Bull attacks are not the Pit Bull's fault, only the owner's fault. This is simply not true. Heredity and breeding play an undeniable role. I don't recall the last child killed by a Chihuahua. I do recall children and even 81 year olds being mauled to death by Pit Bulls.
I love dogs. I had two dogs for years. Pre-covid I volunteered to walk dogs at Miranda's rescue, including Blue Heelers. But I live in daily fear that one or both of my parents will be attacked by their neighbor's Pit Bull. How many times do we have to read the story about the owner saying how sweet the dog was, how they never attacked anyone before? You should not need to train a dog not to attack others.
Fortunately, society seems to be rising to the danger of potentially aggressive dogs.* Humboldt County must up it's game if we are to remain a place safe to inhabit. 1) Impound all dog bite dogs for at least 10 days rabies quarantine. If the owners are so irresponsible to let their dogs bite someone, they are too irresponsible to keep them contained for 10 days, and the victim will pay the price of rabies shots if the dog escapes.
2) Euthanize all unprovoked or vicious attacks
3) Hold owners of dogs fully responsible for their dogs' behavior, especially any breed known to cause serious harm. If the same injuries performed by a human are done by a dog, the owner takes full responsibility (jail).

Hi Gabe,
In regard to any possible solutions to our ongoing dog crisis, can one of the ambassadors be posted at State Beach? Like there are life guards, we could have a "dog guard" with the ability to intervene if necessary. This would be prudent especially on weekends with the tourists showing up soon, although we have quite a problem as it is. I would like to see leash laws enforced on State Beach. Can we have leash law signs posted at the beach? I know that it is city property only to a point going north.
But that would discourage people from letting their dogs go unleashed. The latest email from Jacques Beaupre about all the loose (big) dogs in town and at the beach is frightening and unacceptable. I am starting to feel like a captive in my own house (well, it's Linda Bruce's house! haha) along with my poor dog. Tuffy, having survived the (currently) mean streets of Trinidad, is still quite an athlete and has been deprived of much needed exercise as a result of all of this. Any attack could be far worse next time and could involve a suit against the City if proper precautions aren't taken soon.
There are some municipalities across the country that prohibit pit bulls and other dangerous breeds from living in their communities. This should be part of the conversation for the next City Council meeting.
As always, thanks so much!

Cc: "Trinidad Clerk" <[email protected]>, "Trinidad Manager" <[email protected]> Hi, Maria:
First, let me say that I'm personally appalled and saddened by what happened to Brenda & Ted.
Also, please note that I'm not copying the City Council, but only because this is likely to become a topic of discussion in an upcoming meeting. The statement I made about the two new pilot programs (Ambassador and Private Security) was intended to address the concerns about the City's lack of leash law enforcement and those programs have already been approved by the Council.
I think that these resources, and new signage as you mention which we agree is a good idea, will help us raise awareness and increase the enforcement of the City's existing leash laws and licensing. The City Council will also discuss other ways of communicating to the public the need for licensing and good behavior: direct mail, website, etc.
Having said that, the dog that attacked Ted and Brenda was not being walked off leash. Rather, it escaped its yard. The City has heard that complaints were made to the dog's owner or the renter of the house in the past, but no formal complaints were received by the City. So, another idea we have is to encourage people to make formal reports to the City and County when animals behave in ways that are concerning so we can be aware and take proactive action.
The City is actively working with HCSO, Animal Control, and will be meeting with the victim to discuss next steps in enforcing City ordinances and/or other appropriate legal action.
I appreciate your suggestions and concerns and we'll include them in the discussion at the next Council meeting.
Best,
Cheryl

The rent a cops idea seems OK but how do we prevent situations like what happened to Ted Pease and family from happening again? What preventive measures will be taken? What have other municipalities done? Signage indicating dogs must be leashed, with a $500 fine for noncompliance, is a start. These should be at the trail heads and as you come into town. These should have gone up immediately after the incident with 10 poodles on the beach. I realize the beach is state property and signage probably can't go there.
Can these officers go door to door and determine the number of dogs in each house, whether they are neutered & spayed, vaccinated, and whether they are licensed? That would be a start to at least determine what we are dealing with and that we are all in compliance.
For some reason I couldn't cc Jack Tuttle...

To: Trinidad City Manager <[email protected]>, Gabe Adams <[email protected]> Hello all,
Today 3/20/2023 I counted how many loose dogs I noticed in Trinidad City limits. It started because I had to leave my gate open for a propane delivery. I hate to leave my gate open. Loose dogs running into my yard and the constant STR in and out traffic on my private road are dangerous and abusive.
After I opened the gate, I came back to the house to finish my coffee this morning. I look outside and there is a pitbull mix in my yard. A man called to it and they continued down Parker Creek Trail.
Sitting in my chair I counted 4 more off leash dogs running all over the properties with their owners walking down the trail to Old Home Beach. One dog craps on my driveway and I have to go out and tell the creep to clean up after his dog. I also had to ask that yesterday to another creepy couple.
Later I drove down to Launcher Beach to finish work on the Stormwater sampling project. On the way to the Bay and coming back home to Parker Creek Drive I counted 8 more off leash dogs. There were 2 loose dogs running around on Launcher Beach with nobody controlling the dogs.
Then driving from my house to the freeway I counted 2 loose dogs in Murphy's field. 2 loose dogs and the owner crossing Main Street from Chevron to the bus stop area. 19 unleashed loose dogs, just the ones I noticed in maybe a total 10 -15 minutes driving time in the City of Trinidad. More likely there were probably many more throughout the day.
(At Launcher Beach 3/18 Saturday afternoon 2:00pm, while taking Pre-Storm water samples for the Trinidad Stormwater Improvement Project, I saw a dog fight on the beach. I thought the 2 dogs were going to knock over my sample bottles and instruments. Crazy!)
I am up this late, 11pm, because there is a woman screaming in the greenbelt between Parker Creek Drive and Scenic. I called 911. Hope it is nothing bad.

I am truly disgusted.
How many more dog attacks before something is done?
I'm gonna skip the drama, I deleted that email.
I am really heartbroken.
Nothing seems to get done positive in the city.
I just had a car race by my house down to the STR. Oh, should I make another worthless complaint? Kind of like pissing in the wind. The STR caretakers cars are parked all over the city again. More dog attacks.
Maybe Trinidad should change the name to Denial.
I'm sure I will follow up with a more thorough email. I hope I am not the lone voice complaining.

Hey Gabe..
Sorry about the city's recent trouble with a pit bull dog attack.
Hopefully the law enforcement "arrangement" will take care of it with maximum penalties to the dog owner. Fines, arrest, jail time, euthanasia...all deserved IMHO.
Sunday the 19th was a relatively good day at 52,54,55 North Westhaven. There looked like there was somebody there all day who seemed to have their dogs under control somewhat, respecting any requests from yourself and other city officials. I don't plan to monitor. The city could probably monitor electronically and surreptitiously with little financial outlay. Monday was much worse with no people in evidence all day. They just put the dogs out front from 8 a.m. until after dark and let them bark their heads off, especially at passersby. Tuesday and Wednesday weren't bad.
The big story from Trinidad's "Forgotten Quarter" this week, also last week, is the massive intrusion of big dump trucks going to the Quarry in unincorporated territory. Starts as early as 7:28 a.m. and continues until dark. Maybe over forty trips a day (estimate 5 trips an hour, with occasional brief periods of quiet while they dump their loads somewhere unknown or eat lunch). I've been here well over three years and I've never seen it this bad. Do the quarry operators know in advance when and for long these disruptions occur ? Can they notify the city ? Noise pollution, air pollution, danger to pedestrians, bicyclists, skate-boarders, etc. Rumbling ground tremors also mimicking minor earthquakes.
I wonder if the state agency that reviews all the mandated general plan updates ever monitors the four hundred eighty two cities as to their compliance, especially with regard to the Noise Element.
Thanks for your attention.

Hi- just wondering why the attacking dog is not immediately impounded. Also, was Mr. Pease's dog on a leash- is this even a requirement for walking your dog in Trinidad? Labs have been known to attack, even old ones. So this could have been a reverse scenario hypothetically. Was Mr. Pease being responsible with his dog on a leash. All the same, pitbulls and mixed pitbull breeds should be banned in Trinidad If not, penalties should be extremely severe should they attack since they are prone to attack, no matter how wonderful the owner. This is so sad. The owner should be sued and barred from owning this breed again- thank you Copyright © 2003-2023. All rights reserved.

Just this morning, as I was walking down Parker Creek from my house. There was a dog off leash the field behind the market. 0The dog came rushing towards my roommate and I not responding to the woman.
I was able to frighten it off with the sound of a taser. I hollered to her that there is a leash law and she needs to keep her dog on a leash and she just hollered back she was working on training.
Needless to say, I will remind you that once again I cannot run for my own safety or to protect my dog. I would have felt badly to injure a dog with the Taser, I hope it never comes to that.
The sooner notices can be put up the better

The City will launch an Ambassador program similar to the one other cities (like Arcata) have enacted and will also be hiring a private security firm part-time to augment our law enforcement resources over the coming months.
With both of these programs we hope to be able to positively and proactively improve public safety for our residents and visitors.
Meanwhile, as Gabe mentions, the City is taking yesterday's incident VERY seriously and is working with all the appropriate agencies, and the victims, to help facilitate resolution.
Best,
Cheryl

To: [email protected], Jacques Beaupre <[email protected]>, Maria C Bartlett <[email protected]>, Janine Volkmar <[email protected]>, Deborah Frame <[email protected]> Gabe,
I would like to add my voice to the already received and certain to be incoming complaints.
I feel unable to safely walk my dog locally. I am unable to take my dog to the beach, as there were so many issues with off leash dogs, my smaller dog became very reactive. For his safety, my own and others we can no longer enjoy the beaches here. What a shame and all because people cannot put their dogs on a leash.
I attempted to change beaches and went, only once, to Moonstone beach only to have a woman wait until I was walking back up to the parking lot and opened her car door to let her very large dog charge us with a shout of "he wants to play with your dog". Another woman jumped out of her truck to help us. Let me be clear, the dog was NOT friendly.
I have been sworn at and approached very aggressively on Edwards by a strange male for asking him to put his dog on a leash.
I have been knocked down in the road on Edwards by an off-leash dog. At the time I was wearing a full leg brace and could not run away. As with the case of Ted, Brenda and Stella, I thankfully had local people around to come to my assistance.
I have been cornered on Parker Creek by an off-leash dog to which a neighbor, Jacques, had to come help me.
I have had no less than 5 dogs rush Brody and I on Hector. These dogs were living in the 4 plex behind the Eatery.
I have nearly slipped down the embankments on our trails as off leash dogs rushed us and I picked up Brody and stepped off the trail to get out of the way.

https://email16.secureserver.net/view_print_multi.php?uidArray=46365|INBOX&aEmlPart=0 Page 3 of 3 My sister Deb's hearing dog Rylee was attacked on the beach. Rylee was nearly killed as the bite/tear narrowly missed her femoral artery. Let me remind you my sister is completely deaf. In this recent incident with the dog on Wagner, my sister frequently works on gardening there. She would not hear the dog coming and has severe balance issues and would be completely unable to defend herself or her dog.
There are a lot of retirees here that would be unable to defend themselves. If I am not mistaken there was a man on a bicycle that was badly injured by an off-leash dog as well. I, myself, am unable to run and would be unable to get away.
This is unacceptable that so many of us are afraid to walk the streets of our little town just because people won't leash their dogs.
It is my understanding that the City has stated it does not have funding to enforce the dog leash rules. It would seem that there needs to be some way to protect those of us that live here. I have also been told that after Katherine's attack there would be signs placed warning of leash laws and a penalty. This has not been done.
Where I live, behind Murphy's, people park in the lot, open their car doors to release their dogs and "meet them at the beach". Not to mention, many people seem to view that lot as a "dog park" where their dogs run, unleashed. Also of note is the fecal waste that is not picked up. We have had to build a fence in my front yard as an attempt to protect myself and my dog. Believe me, I have suffered some fairly extreme verbal abuse when I have asked (nicely) for people to please leash their dogs.
There have been repeated attacks, issues and complaints, yet nothing has changed. I don't know what it will take to find a remedy for this situation. I would hope that this is enough, but I suspect until someone is hit hard financially, nothing will change. In this case, would it be the city for not enforcing and or creating laws? Will it be that the citizens have to protect themselves and some sort of vigilante issues will ensue? What a sad commentary on the way things are.
I feel like I need to protect myself and my dog when I leave my house. I am not alone. It seems unreasonable for the citizens here to resort to self protection to walk in our neighborhood with or without our dogs.
Please, create some enforcement before something catastrophic incurs. --
Kym

Thanks for that, Sheriff. We appreciate your response.
We, and everyone else in Trinidad, are concerned that the dog has not been seized, and may not be because this is a “first offense,” even though the neighbors have previously complained to the landlord about this dog. As others have pointed out, a human assailant would attacked us and did this kind of damage would have been charged with assault and jailed. We are also concerned that, even if the owner and dog move away from Trinidad, a dangerous dog will be living in some other unsuspecting community. If that is the case, I hope Animal Control will closely monitor them.
We would be glad to work with you to address inadequacies in the current regs, including circumstances for seizing a violent animal, and recourse for victims against the animal’s owner. In this case, Marc Brodell, the owner, has not answered or returned our phone calls or, I understand, from Deputy Patton.
Best,

Hello, Sheriff Honsal.
In case you have not heard about the vicious dog attack on my wife, dog and me in Trinidad on Wednesday, I wanted to contact you with our concerns that this dangerous animal remains in its home on Wagner under county animal control policy.
The dog ran from a distance — at least 200 yards — to attack our dog, which was leashed, as we walked along Ocean Avenue at about 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. It took me and at least one other large, fit male to get the dog off our dog. In the process, the dog bit the end of my finger off and bit my wife in the leg. Then the dog pursued and attacked our dog twice more. The damage to all three of us was considerable, physical and otherwise.
This is clearly a dangerous animal that should not be permitted to remain in the community. It has proven itself to be a threat to public safety. I am grateful, if that’s the right word, that we were the victims instead of someone less able to defend herself with a small dog, or, God forbid, a child. It was horrific, but could have been much worse.
I know Supervisor Madrone and Trinidad Mayor Cheryl Kelly are interested in finding ways to change animal control authorizations and ordinances to better protect the public. If anything good can come of this, better animal control regs would be a good start.
Thank you,
Ted Pease

Ted and Brenda -- This is awful. Why didn't the news media tell us this before ? I hope that the surgeons could restore your finger, that Brenda's head injury wasn't serious, and that Stella will mend. None of you will ever recover fully from the trauma of such an attack.
Every Thursday my frail and delicate 80-year-old wife walks that same loop in Trinidad. I will never again let her walk it alone. I have a nice massive little crowbar with a sharp and sturdy hook. My shoulder and arm muscles are still quite strong enough to lodge it in an attacker's brain.
Expressing our love, good wishes, and enduring support for the three of you in this terrible ordeal. We unfortunately live among people who have no respect for the law, no sense of social responsibility, no empathy. Scum of the earth, as they have been for nearly 200 years. Law enforcement ? Rare and selective in a county where so many people want no law enforcement.
Anyway, love and sympathy and good wishes,
Jim and Ginny

Subject: Dog attacks
City of Trinidad and County of Humboldt, California State Parks, I am writing again to ask you to enact and enforce laws that protect the health and welfare of the community in regards to dogs “at large” within the city, county and State Park limits. “At large means a dog off the premises of its owner and not under restraint by leash controlled by the owner or custodian of such dog.“ Personally, I have been attacked multiple times by off leash dogs, and bitten more than once, on the trails, the beaches and the streets of Trinidad over the past twenty years. The City of Trinidad and the State of California (beaches ) have “leash laws” but the they are not enforced. Dogs run loose and owners “believe or hope “ their dogs will not bite. Until they do. We are all weary of hearing the excuses of off leash dog owners who state, ”My dog is friendly“. When actually their dog is frightening to those who don’t know it. The comfort level of the person using the same space with an unleashed dog is ignored and the laws we do have are worthless. Many locals, myself included, have been sworn at and threatened on multiple occasions, by dog owners, when they were asked to leash their loose dogs. Often stating that there dogs “are under voice control” as they are growling or jumping on me, or my family. This creates additional serious problems. Loose dogs are a significant threat to public health, safety, and welfare. Loose dogs are unsafe for those who use city, county, and state streets, trails, and beaches. Loose dogs are a public nuisance. Local laws should reflect this and be enforced.
Thank you,
Kathleen Lake

RE: March 15 dog attack
For those who haven’t heard, the official hearing on last month’s (3/15) dog attack on Brenda, Stella and me in Trinidad was Thursday (4/6) at the Humboldt County Courthouse, attorney Sarah Kaber presiding. Marc Brodell, a renter and the dog’s owner, didn’t show up.
The hearing officer, after testimony from Animal Control officer Robert Patton and me, declared the dog “vicious.” This is a moot point, however, unless Brodell can be located. The Animal Shelter released the dog to Brodell about two weeks ago without notifying anyone, and Brodell has moved out and disappeared. It is concerning that this dog has moved to another unsuspecting neighborhood.
It seems a pretty big loophole in the county dog ordinance that the Animal Shelter would release the dog to the owner before the hearing on its status, and that there is no sanction, citation, fine or penalty for the owner. We would hope that both the county and the city find ways to continue to be dog-friendly while also enforcing ordinances to protect the public and to hold negligent dog owners accountable.
We are glad to report that Stella is recovering well, although she will probably always limp from the injuries to her front foot, which was crushed. Brenda was bitten on her left calf and knocked to the ground. My finger is, well, shorter. It will take a long time.
Finally, Brenda, Stella and I would like to express how grateful we are to our friends and neighbors here in Trinidad and elsewhere for their caring messages and support both during and after the attack. If good samaritans hadn’t jumped in, the damage would have been much worse. Special thanks to Mayor Cheryl Kelly and City Clerk Gabe Adams for their help and support.
We have been so touched by everyone's good wishes and gifts of goodies and dog toys, tasers and dog spray. What a wonderful town this is! We hope that this scary incident doesn’t keep Trinidaddians from enjoying walks around their beautiful and peaceful town. That would be a truly tragic.

Hi, Steve.
In case you haven’t heard, the hearing on the dog attack on Brenda, Stella and me in Trinidad on March 15 was Thursday at the Courthouse. Marc Brodell, the dog owner, didn’t show up. The hearing officer, after testimony from Animal Control officer Rob Patton and me, declared the dog “vicious.” This is a moot point unless Brodell can be located. The Animal Shelter released the dog to Brodell about two weeks ago without notifying any of us, victims or neighbors, and Brodell removed the last of his belongings from the Wagner Street apartment this past week and has disappeared.
Let me share what I just wrote to Jim Baker, for Trinidad Council member, in response to his query about holding Brodell accountable:
I agree, Jim. Accountability would be good, but this guy has fled. He was a longterm renter, subletting part of the Pennisis’ little house at the end of Wagner. Our attorney has sent both him and the Pennisis letters with claims for their insurance companies, but we expect nothing from Brodell (the dog owner) now that he has disappeared, and have had no response from Pennisis. It seems a pretty big loophole in the county dog ordinance that the Animal Shelter would release the dog to the owner before the hearing on its status, and — especially — that there is no sanction, citation, fine, penalty of any kind for an owner of a vicious dog who attacks and injures people.
Our injuries aside, it seems that the opublic in general has been poorly served in this incident by not requiring some accountability of Brodell, and in letting a dog judged as “vicious” back into the community without regard to public safety.

All:
I just spoke with Andre Hale, the manager of the Animal Shelter. She says the next step is for a decision over whether to hold a hearing to determine the dog’s status — “restricted” or “potentially dangerous.” The dog will not be considered “vicious,” the level required for euthanasia, because the attack was on another dog, not on a human; we were bitten because we inserted ourselves in the fight. In other words, our injuries are our own damn fault.
Once the quarantine is over (3/25), deputies will inspect the owner’s property to make sure it is secure, and then the dog will be returned. When Brodell moves, he will be required to inform Animal Control so deputies can inspect the new residence for security.
If there is a hearing, it *may* be open to the public. That’s unclear. Andre said she will let us know if/when a hearing is scheduled, probably tomorrow after Rob Patton is back at work.

Hi Gabe--haven't seen you in a long time. Hope you're doing well. I was horrified by the news of the pit bull attack on Ted Pease's family and dog. The poodles were lousy too. Sorry I don't live in Trinidad now--I miss it a lot--but I do come up regularly to work in the garden at Camelot, visit friends, and walk in the park. I strongly encourage you to do what can and needs to be done to deal with irresponsible dog owners. I had a similar experience here in Arcata. Fortunately the dog was not a pit bull. I tried to email Steve Madrone but I think I got his email wrong.

Anyway, I shared the work we are doing on the Ambassador program and Private Security law enforcement 'augmentation' and that we will also look at the City's ordinances to see if they need any 'hardening'. I reinforced the message that City staff are 'all over this' issue and we are all very concerned.
Diane said that there is a citizen group forming to address this because 'people are really pissed'. I offered the City Council meetings as a forum for discussion but Diane would like to see a Town Hall meeting on this matter.

Dear Mayor Kelly,
I am one of your constituents and a volunteer at Humboldt County Animal Shelter, and a resident of Trinidad. I personally know the people attacked last Wednesday- both as fellow volunteers at the Shelter, and also from Trinidad. I was horrified to hear the details. I am also a retired general surgeon. I have dogs and cats of my own.
I am surprised that the attacking dog was not remanded to the shelter for quarantine. I am also surprised that there is no public hearing and that the next step is to register the dog as “restricted” for three years — under constant control, secure yard, etc. If there is another attack in the three years, God forbid, then the dog can be declared “vicious” and can be destroyed. How can you be confident in the owner of the attacking dog? I don’t think “hoping” nothing else will happen holds any water.
I believe the dog is vicious and a danger to public safety. The fact that the dog resides in town where people are out on the street walking around poses too much risk. Dogs that attack are likely to repeatedly offend.
What if she “accidentally slips out the door"- tomorrow? Or a week from Tuesday? Or whenever? I do not say this lightly but I believe that she poses an ongoing danger to the public and should be euthanized. Just ask Andre Hale and Rob Patton (animal shelter manager and officer, respectively) about my genuine love for dogs and desire to give problem dogs the benefit of the doubt before ever considering the drastic step of euthanasia.
Euthanasia is not cruel (but certainly can be abused). It would be done kindly and comfortably for the dog. I truly believe that euthanasia should be contemplated only in the most extreme cases. This clearly is one of those extreme cases.
Sincerely,
Jane Williams MD

Hi Maria,
I'm as disturbed about this as you.
