Re: Opposition to Item #7.1 Adopt a Resolution Approving the Community Workforce Agreement with the Building and Construction Trades Council of Alameda County and Those Signatory Local Unions
Dear Mayor Singh, Vice Mayor Sakakihara and members of the City Council of Union City:

The members of Nor Cal Carpenters Union Local 713 in Union City, Alameda County and the surrounding Bay Area oppose the proposed Community Workforce Agreement (CWA) in its current iteration. The proposed CWA excludes the largest construction Trade Union in the State of California.

The number of union Carpenter jobs that will not be available to the residents of Union City and the lost opportunity for local apprentices to begin or continue a career in the construction industry is significant.

It is our duty to protect the wages, benefits, working conditions and job opportunities for our eleven apprenticeable crafts who depend on this work for a livelihood in Union City and the surrounding area.

Carpenters Local 713 is saddened that an agreement with the City and an entity that does not represent our Carpenter Brothers and Sisters will be pushed through without the support or advice of the Nor Cal Carpenters Union. We ask that the council delay approval of the proposed CWA until a later date.

Sincerely,
Israel C. Avila
President
Carpenters Union Local 713
