Tri-CED Environmental Education and Workforce Development Training Facility Tri-CED’s Environmental Education and Workforce Development Training facility will serve as a classroom for community and staff education, as follows:
Community Environmental Education Program
The Community Environmental Education Program will provide community education for individuals in Alameda County on proper waste management practices, aiming to increase recycling rates and reduce waste sent to landfills. This program will focus on the following:
• Understanding the recycling process: Participants will receive a tour of TRI-CED’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and an overview of the single-stream recycling process. • Education on proper recycling: Training clarifies what materials are accepted in recycling programs, often specific to the local area and program. • Waste sorting instruction: Participants learn how to separate different types of waste, including recyclables, compostables, and landfill waste. • Understanding diversion: Training explains the concept of waste diversion, which includes recycling, composting, and other methods to keep waste out of landfills. • Environmental and economic benefits: Participants learn about the positive impacts of recycling on the environment (e.g., resource conservation, reduced pollution) and the potential cost savings associated with waste reduction. • Importance of contamination reduction: Training emphasizes the need to avoid contaminating recycling streams, as this can lead to materials being rejected for recycling.
• Best practices for waste reduction: Training will cover waste reduction strategies like reducing consumption, reusing items, and composting food waste. • Addressing common challenges: Training will address common recycling mistakes and how to avoid them.
The Community Environmental Education Program will provide trainings on a quarterly basis.
Participants will complete a pre- and post-survey to assess impact of the training on recycling and landfill diversion knowledge. In addition, the facility will be made available for recycling education-focused community events.
