Recognizing November 2025 as Native American Heritage Month WHEREAS, Native American Heritage Month honors the invaluable contributions of Native peoples who have shaped our nation and recognizes the hundreds of Tribal Nations that continue to exercise sovereignty within the United States; and WHEREAS, Native communities have endured centuries of violence, displacement, and forced assimilation, yet their resilience has allowed their diverse cultures, traditions, and ways of life to thrive and continue enriching the fabric of the United States; and WHEREAS, Native Americans have contributed significantly to public service, including serving at the highest levels of government and in the U.S. Armed Forces at higher rates than any other ethnic group, while also serving as stewards of lands of great cultural and environmental significance; and
WHEREAS, Union City is located on the ancestral lands of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people, whose descendants are represented today by the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area, and it is our responsibility to honor their legacy, recognize the impact of colonization, and continue working toward mutual respect and understanding with the original peoples of this land; and
WHEREAS, the City of Union City values the strength and wisdom of Native communities and recognizes their ongoing role in shaping a more just, sustainable, and inclusive future for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Union City hereby proclaims November 2025 as Native American Heritage Month and encourages all residents to learn about and appreciate the history, culture, and contributions of Native Americans and to support efforts that advance the dignity and well-being of Indigenous communities.
