STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT
This agenda item is not explicitly identified in the City Council Strategic Plan, nor is it directly correlated to a specific priority or goal.
BACKGROUND
The National League of Cities (NLC) is a national organization that represents the interests of cities, towns, and villages, working to strengthen local leadership and advocate for the needs of local governments at the federal level. Through the NLC, municipal officials collaborate on national issues, share best practices, and advance the principles of local self-governance.
Each November, the NLC hosts the annual City Summit—a gathering of local elected officials, staff, and industry leaders to exchange ideas, attend educational sessions, and participate in policy discussions. The conference concludes with the Annual Business Meeting, during which NLC members elect officers, receive reports, and adopt national municipal policies forming the organization’s federal advocacy agenda for the upcoming year.
Per the NLC’s bylaws, each member city is entitled to designate one (1) voting delegate and may designate up to one (1) alternate delegate to vote in the event the primary delegate is unavailable. The number of votes assigned to each city is determined by population size; Union City, with a population between 50,000 and 99,000, is entitled to two (2) votes.
