CITY OF UNION CITY

CITY CLERK'S OFFICE
Natalie Dean, Associate Planner
City Of Union City, CA. 94587
Dear Ms. Dean,
I'm writing to you in regard to the Notice Of Public Hearing which will be occurring by the planning commission on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, which is discussing the AT&T cell tower being placed at Southern Alameda Buddhist Church on 32975 Alvarado-Niles Road. My family, 1, and neighbors are in extremely strong opposition to the construction of this cell tower so close to us.

According to several scientific studies such as one written on the site of Environmental Health Trust, cell towers too close to schools and residences emit extremely high and hazardous radio frequency (RF) non-ionizing radiation waves which can cause cancer, genetic damage, memory problem, impacts to the nervous system, and other health issues.

Although there is no concrete evidence of harmful health effects, many scientific writings conclude that there is something to it and more study is needed. My family and I do not wish to be a part of that kind of study, or statistic.

I understand the need to raise revenue for the church, and Union City, but at what cost? Is there no compassion for people who may be directly exposed to hazardous environments in their own homes? Isn't the city supposed to take care of its residents, rather than cause harm? Everyone knows the having too many x-rays isn't good for your health, so is it safe to be exposed to radiation levels 100's of times higher than an occasional medical procedure. I recently had a bout of cancer and had radiation treatment. The treatment caused harm to other parts of my body which will be with me the rest of my life.

I was curious as to why the location of the tower has to be so close to Chavez Middle School, and in the backyards of the neighbors who live between Dowe Avenue and Hop Ranch. I have no technical knowledge of placements of cell towers and such, but why place the tower directly in a neighborhood? Can't it be located in a more industrial area where people aren't living 24/7? There are many young children here and they're a lot more susceptible to hazardous environments than adults.

In conclusion, I hope that the Planning Commission will not allow the AT&T Mobility cell tower to be constructed at The Buddhist Church. Please take our objections into consideration finding the placement of the tower to be too close, and harmful to everyone in the near proximity to its location.

Sincerelv.

William Lum
