PROCLAMATION
Honoring City Engineer Farooq Azim for Over
34 Years of Dedicated Service to the City of
Union City
WHEREAS, Farooq Azim began his service to the City of Union City in 1991 as a Civil Engineer I in the Public Works Department, supporting projects that improved our roads, sidewalks, and neighborhoods, while also helping residents with permit needs and engineering questions; and
WHEREAS, through his strong work ethic and deep technical knowledge, Farooq was promoted to Civil Engineer II and later Civil Engineer III, taking on larger and more complex capital projects, preparing project plans and estimates, managing permits, writing grants, reviewing development plans, and supporting the community with professionalism and care; and
WHEREAS, in 2006, Farooq became Principal Civil Engineer, supervising staff, managing the land development program, reviewing traffic studies, coordinating subdivision maps and agreements, calculating fees, and leading major multi-agency efforts, including the Union City Intermodal Station and the Pedestrian At-Grade Crossing projects with BART and Union Pacific Railroad; and WHEREAS, in 2018, Farooq was promoted to City Engineer, where he led the Engineering Division with steady leadership, guiding major land development efforts and capital improvement projects, mentoring staff, coordinating with City departments, and overseeing key programs such as encroachment, transportation, grading, and the Landscape and Lighting Maintenance District, all while serving as a trusted voice at Planning Commission and City Council meetings; and WHEREAS, Farooq’s calm leadership, generous mentorship, and unwavering commitment to public service have left a lasting mark on Union City. His work has improved the daily lives of residents and all those who travel through our streets, neighborhoods, and transportation systems, including the Union City BART Station.
His contributions will continue to benefit the community for many years to come.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Union City hereby expresses its sincere appreciation to Farooq Azim for his more than 34 years of dedicated service, and congratulates him on a remarkable career and a job well done.
