SUBJECT: Adopt a Resolution Appointing the Vice Mayor for Calendar Year 2026
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report supports the annual selection of the Vice Mayor for calendar year 2026, as required by Union City Municipal Code Section 2.04.080. Under the Municipal Code, the City Council annually selects one of its members to serve as Vice-Mayor on the second Tuesday in December. Traditionally, the Mayor recommends a member of the City Council for consideration to serve as Vice Mayor. Staff has prepared a resolution for the appointment of a Vice Mayor.
STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT
This item supports Goal B: Governance and Organization Effectiveness, ensuring leadership continuity and organizational stability.
BACKGROUND
Section 2.04.080 of the Union City Municipal Code requires the City Council to select one of its members to serve as Vice Mayor annually, with this action occurring on the second Tuesday of December or as soon thereafter as practicable.
The Vice Mayor presides over City Council meetings in the Mayor’s absence and assumes all Mayoral duties when required.
DISCUSSION
In accordance with Union City Municipal Code Section 2.04.080, the City Council will consider the selection of a Councilmember to serve as Vice Mayor for the calendar year 2026. The attached resolution documents and formalize the Council’s approval.

RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council consider the proposed resolution for the appointment of a Vice Mayor for the calendar year 2026.
