CITY OF UNION CITY

PROCLAMATION

Honoring February 2026 as Black History Month
WHEREAS, Black History Month traces its origins to 1926, when historian Dr. Carter G.

Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History established Negro History Week during the second week of February to recognize and honor the history and achievements of African Americans; and
WHEREAS, in 1970, Black students and educators at Kent State University expanded the observance to a month-long celebration, which was formally recognized by the United States government in 1976 and is now observed annually in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the vital role African Americans have played in shaping our nation’s history, culture, economy, and civic life through leadership, innovation, perseverance, and service; and
WHEREAS, African Americans have made lasting contributions across all sectors of society, including education, science, medicine, arts and culture, business, labor, public service, and social justice, often in the face of systemic barriers and inequality; and WHEREAS, the experiences, struggles, and achievements of African Americans continue to inform our shared history and remind us of the ongoing work needed to advance equity, understanding, and opportunity for all; and
WHEREAS, the City of Union City is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming community that values diversity and honors the contributions of African Americans, both past and present.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gary Singh, Mayor of the City of Union City, and on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim February 2026 as Black History Month in the City of Union City and encourage all residents to participate in educational programs, cultural events, and community activities that celebrate and honor African American history and heritage.
