RESOLUTION NO. 2026-XXX
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF UNION CITY DESIGNATING THE “SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL PLAZA”
WITHIN OLD ALVARADO PARK AND RECOGNIZING THE
CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE UNION CITY FRIENDS OF SISTER CITIES WHEREAS, Old Alvarado Park, located at 3871 Smith Street, is a historic community park that serves as a gathering place for residents and community events; and
WHEREAS, the City of Union City has established and maintained Sister City relationships that promote cultural exchange, international understanding, and community engagement; and
WHEREAS, the Union City Friends of Sister Cities organization has played a significant role in supporting the City’s Sister Cities program through volunteerism, community outreach, and cultural programming; and
WHEREAS, on April 10, 2024, the Park and Recreation Commission reviewed a proposal to designate the plaza area within Old Alvarado Park and unanimously supported forwarding a naming concept to the City Council for consideration; and WHEREAS, the proposed plaza area within Old Alvarado Park, including the gazebo, has been enhanced and utilized as a gathering space for Sister Cities-related activities, including the installation of commemorative benches in August 2024; and WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the importance of preserving the historical identity of Old Alvarado Park and respecting the original intent of the land dedication for the benefit of Old Alvarado residents; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to designate the plaza area within Old Alvarado Park in a manner that reflects the City’s commitment to international partnerships while maintaining the existing name of the park.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Union City hereby designates the plaza (gazebo area) within Old Alvarado Park, located at 3871 Smith Street, as the “Sister Cities International Plaza”, and recognizes the contributions of the Union City Friends of Sister Cities in advancing cultural exchange, international partnerships, and community engagement in Union City.
