1 am Rosa Ortega, a leader with Faith in Action East Bay and resident of district One, in Union I am here to ask for more than theatrics of strengthening a resolution that legally means nothing. You all spoke about false hope when discussing the ordinance but here you are proposing and supporting something that gives false hope. So what really are your reasons not to support the ordinance?
I urge you, City Council, to reconsider and reintroduce the Ordinance Councilmember Lance proposed to restrict the use of City-owned or City-Controlled property for federal civil immigration enforcement activities in order to protect us ALL.

We reiterate the importance of codifying these policies into the Union City Municipal Code so they become lasting and enforceable law, not just a statement of intent. This is the bare minimum you can do.

By reintroducing and passing an ordinance that protects our immigrant community members, you are giving families a fighting chance. You are creating real barriers to harmful enforcement actions. You are showing that you are prepared to stand with us and use the authority of the local government to protect the people you represent.

We have witnessed the fear, trauma, and disruption that federal immigration enforcement activities have caused in communities across California and throughout the country. Families have been separated. Children have been taken from their parents. Pregnant womxn have been subjected to deplorable conditions. Suicide rates in detention facilities have risen.

Communities are living in fear, and our economy is suffering.

We urge you to reintroduce and pass the ordinance restricting the use of city property for federal civil immigration enforcement activities!
