CITY OF UNION CITY

PROCLAMATION
Recognizing June 2026 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month
WHEREAS, the month of June is recognized as Elder Abuse Awareness Month to raise awareness, promote prevention, support survivors, and help protect older adults from abuse that often occurs in private and may go unnoticed; and
WHEREAS, this national awareness builds on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed every June 15, as part of a global effort to highlight the millions of older adults affected by abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation; and WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies an older adult as a person age 60 or older and notes that elder abuse often occurs at the hands of a caregiver or other trusted person, including physical, psychological, financial abuse, and neglect; and
WHEREAS, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse, about 1 in 10 older adults experiences some form of abuse each year, and only a fraction of cases are reported; and WHEREAS, the City of Union City is committed to raising awareness about elder abuse and encourages individuals, organizations, and community partners to learn the warning signs, report concerns, and take action to prevent and stop abuse; and WHEREAS, we recognize and thank the caregivers, family members, friends, advocates, and community partners in Union City who help protect older adults and support their dignity, safety, and respect.

NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Union City does hereby proclaim June 2026 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in the City of Union City and extends sincere appreciation to AARP California for its advocacy and educational efforts with national, state, and local leaders, families, and community partners to turn awareness into action by promoting education, resources, and support services to prevent and address elder abuse.
