Hello Andrew,
I see on the upcoming city council meeting on Tuesday that there's going to be a renewal of a Five-year agreement with Axon Enterprise, Inc. that's nearly $2 million on the budget.
I understand in general that Axon provides things like body cams and other gear for policing. They also are getting into a lot of technical/Al/dashboard stuff that can have concerning privacy risks.
Would you mind sharing more information about how the city uses Axon currently and the plans for use in the 5 year term renewal? Some of the concerns come out of the Al tool use like from the ACLU:
https://www.aclu.org/news/privacy-technology/ai-policy-guidance-police Along with EFF (electronic frontier foundation):
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/07/axons-draft-one-designed-defy-transparency As we saw with the Flock conversation, often these tools have unintended consequences for our privacy rights, and since it's such a long renewal period, sorting this out before the renewal would be ideal.
Another question is does it need to be 5 years for the renewal? Especially if we're diving into new and uncharted technologies.
Thank you all for your time. I'm including Lance and Scott as they were most receptive to my prior concerns.
