Why do you want to be a Commission member? What do you feel you could contribute? I would like to serve on the Parks and Recreation Commission to represent the perspective of families with young children and contribute to the continued improvement of Union City’s parks, recreation facilities, and programs. As a parent, I value accessible, well-maintained public spaces and programs that give families opportunities to spend time, connect with the community, and enjoy the city where they live.
I have lived in Union City for seven years and hope to make it my permanent home. As a relatively newer resident, I believe I can bring a fresh perspective while also learning from longtime residents, fellow commissioners, and City staff. I would like to contribute by listening to community needs, asking thoughtful questions, and helping identify opportunities to make our parks and recreation system even more welcoming and valuable to families and residents of all ages.
What qualifies you for this appointment?
My professional experience includes working in both the public and private sectors, with a focus on project management, budgeting, process improvement, and working with diverse stakeholders. Through my current work in the public sector, I have also gained a better understanding of how public agencies balance community needs, available resources, and long-term priorities.
I believe I would bring a thoughtful and practical perspective to the Commission. I am comfortable reviewing information, asking questions, listening to different viewpoints, and working collaboratively to identify solutions. As a Union City resident and parent, I would also bring firsthand perspective on how parks, recreation facilities, and programs contribute to the quality of life for families in our community.
What is your vision for the Parks and Recreation Commission? My vision is for Union City to have safe, clean, welcoming, and well-maintained parks and recreation spaces where families want to spend their time. With Fremont, Newark, and Hayward nearby, I would like Union City to continue improving its parks, facilities, and programs so that residents have more opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and recreation within their own community.
I also believe improvements should be practical and sustainable. My vision is not necessarily about creating the newest or most expensive facilities, but about understanding what residents value most and making thoughtful use of available resources to improve the quality and accessibility of our parks and recreation system. 3/5

What community activities are you presently involved in, or have been in the past? Earlier in my career, I volunteered with the American Red Cross for a short period of time. While I have not been formally involved with a community organization in recent years, I am now looking for opportunities to become more engaged in my local community. As a Union City resident and parent, I have become increasingly interested in how I can contribute to the community and help improve the quality of life for residents and families.

Hi Thai,
Thank you for reaching out. Yes, I would be interested in being considered for appointment as an alternate member of the Economic Development Advisory Team. It sounds like a great opportunity to learn more about and contribute to the City’s economic development efforts.
The midday meeting schedule should generally work for me as well. Please feel free to update my application to reflect my interest in EDAT.
I appreciate Mayor Singh’s consideration and look forward to hearing about the next steps.
Best,
Christine

Hi Christine,
Thank you for your interest in serving the City of Union City. Mayor Singh reviewed your application for the Parks and Recreation Commission and would like to know whether you would be interested in being considered for appointment as an alternate member of the Economic Development Advisory Team (EDAT).
EDAT advises the City Council on matters affecting local businesses and the City’s economic health, including business retention, attraction, and development. The team meets at least quarterly, generally at noon in the City Hall Council Conference Room. Meetings typically last approximately 90 minutes to two hours, with specific dates scheduled by staff.
Lunch is provided to the team members given the timeframe.
Alternate members are encouraged to attend meetings to remain familiar with the team’s work and may be seated as voting members when regular members are absent.
Appointments are made by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council.
Please let me know whether you would be interested and whether the midday meeting schedule would work for you. If so, I can coordinate the next steps, including updating your application to reflect your interest in EDAT.
Best,
Thai Nam Pham, MMC, CPMC
