Mental Health Awareness Month
Recommendation
Proclaim May 2026 as “Mental Health Awareness Month” in the City of Vernon and support initiatives that promote mental health awareness, employee wellness, and access to available resources.
Background
May is nationally recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, an annual observance established in 1949 by Mental Health America to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma, and promote access to resources and support. Federal Agencies, including the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, participate in this nationwide effort through public education, outreach campaigns, and community-based initiatives.
Mental Health is a critical component of overall health and well-being; however, many individuals continue to face barriers to care due to stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to services.
Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity for open dialogue, encourages early intervention, and promotes supportive environments where individuals feel empowered to seek help when needed.
The City of Vernon is committed to supporting the health and well-being of its employees.
Recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to further promote a culture of wellness, resilience, and support.
As part of this effort, the Human Resources Department will coordinate wellness activities and share resources in May to increase awareness and encourage City employees to prioritize their mental health. These initiatives align with the City’s ongoing commitment to employee engagement, retention, and overall workplace well-being. By recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month, the City reinforces its support for employees and demonstrates leadership in fostering a healthy work environment.
