Re: Application for Real Estate Representative, Vernon Business and Industry Commission
Dear Members of the Selection Committee:
I am writing to submit my candidacy for the Real Estate Representative seat on the Vernon Business and Industry Commission. Like many representatives before me, I have worked in Vernon since the beginning of my career at Lee & Associates, and the city is the foundation of most my professional life. Many of the largest transactions of my career have closed within Vernon’s borders, and I currently represent a substantial roster of business operators and property owners who do business in the city every day. It would be a privilege to contribute to Vernon’s continued success in a more formal capacity.
What sets Vernon apart, in my view, is its ability to sustain a genuinely pro-business, proindustry environment in the middle of the least business-friendly climate in the country. While California and Los Angeles County grow increasingly hostile to industry, Vernon continues to function as a working city — one that understands its constituents, moves at the speed of business, and protects the conditions that allow its companies to compete and grow. I recognize that outcome is not accidental. It is the result of great and hardworking people who came before, and I believe it is worth defending with the same intentionality that created it.
I also believe Vernon faces real challenges that demand constant vigilance. External pressure on Vernon has not eased, and the city continues to have detractors who would be content to see what Vernon has built dismantled, or cut into pieces (BNSF, Metro, etc). At the same time, complacency from within is its own risk in any institution that has been successful for a long time. Maintaining Vernon’s edge requires honest assessment and fresh thinking. At 33, I would bring a generational perspective that is currently underrepresented — one that is comfortable with rapid market shifts, evolving logistics models, changing tenant demands, and the technology and policy changes reshaping industrial real estate. I think that perspective, paired with deep on-the-ground Vernon experience, is exactly what the Commission can use to stay ahead of where the world is going.
Among colleagues and clients, I am known for two things in particular: rigorous critical thinking when facing complex business problems, and creativity solving them. I do not approach problems superficially, and I am not afraid to push back when conventional thinking misses a simpler or stronger solution. I put real effort into everything I take on, and I would bring that same standard of work to the Commission.
I would be honored to put my experience, my network, and my full effort behind Vernon’s continued success. Thank you for your consideration; I welcome the opportunity to discuss my candidacy further at the Committee’s convenience.
Respectfully,
Miles Solomon
